This study was carried out to clarify the varietal resistance to black rot of cabbage, caused by Xanthomonas campestris pv.campestris (Pammel 1895) Dowson 1939 among nineteen commercial cultivars under field condition. The results were as follows: The evaluation of resistance was based on the rates of diseased plants and disease indexes. 'Delicious' and 'Irodori' were highly resisitant. 'YR Kinshu', 'YR Aoba' and 'Ayahikari' were also resisitant. But, 'Okina', 'YR Seishun', 'Savoy King' and 'Setter' were susceptible. Ten other cultivars showed moderate resisitance. 'Shikidori,''YCR Anjyu,''Matsunami' and 'Kosui' varied greatly in the resisitance level between two trials.

The behavior and injury by giant garden slag, Limax marginatus Muller was studied in vinyl covered house planted asparagus at late April. The slug injured asparagus, principally from 20:00 to 24:00. Most slugs were observed on the side and joint parts of the house. However the slug was not able to find at the center of the house. Three kinds of attractine pesticide, methomyl, XMC, metaldehyde were tested. Slugs were cought the most effectively by XMC. Their damage to the young stem of asparagus was able to decreased by mass catching of XMC.

The occurrences of damping-off to plug seedlings of cabbage were investigated in a nursery of vegetable seedlings in Mie prefecture on August to November 1997. During the investigation, the disease caused by Alternaria brassicicola (Schweinitz) Wiltshire was found most frequently. Symptoms produced by A. brassicicola were black or gray lesions on cotyledons at early stage of the occurrence and spread to hypocotyl or shoot, then seedlings were damped off. On October and November, damping-off by Pythium megalacanthum de Bary was occurred. The fungus produced water-soaked lesion on hypocotyl and turned it white in dry condition. Diseases on hypocotyl by Rhizoctonia solani Kühn and Phoma lingam (Tode:Fries) Desmazières were found in a few cases. R. solani produced brown lesion. P. lingam made the hypocotyls dry and brown or cream color. Two Fusarium spp. that were not cited as cabbage pathogens, were isolated from damping-off seedlings with brown lesion, and their virulence were recognized. In greenhouses in National Research Institute of Vegetables, Ornamental Plants and Tea, damping-off caused by A. brassicicola, P. megalacanthum and P. lingam were also found. Besides these diseases, damping-off caused by Pythium aphanidermatum (Edson) Firzpatrick was occurred in summer. The symptom looked like that by P. megalacanthum.

In view of frequent isolation of Botrytis cinerea from grape berries rotten during stotage, infection frequency by this fungus was determined by young and mature berries harvested from a vine yard. The fungus was isolated at high frequency from flower petal, fruits of young clusters, and peduncle, perianth, but rarely from pericarp, of mature clusters. All the young berries rotten in the field were found to be infected by the fungus. It was also detected in seeds in some mature fruits. These results suggested that the berry rot during the stotage may most probably be originated from field infection of the fruits by this fungus. Thus, the effect of field application of fungicides on storage rot was determined. The spray of iprodione, an effective inhivitor of the fungus growth, at the recommended concentration 65 days before harvest, was found to effectively control the berry rot in the field as well as the post-harvest deteriortation during 2 months of storage.

The populations of the cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii, living on mandarin and pear in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan exhibited resistance to malathion, NAC and permethrin. When the aphids was transfered from mandarin and pear to vegetable hosts, cucumber and eggplant, the growth of offspring was greatly suppressed. These results showed that the biotype of aphids on mandarin and pear is different from the biotypes. of aphids on vegetable hosts. Whereas aphids from vegetables and others could be reared on mandarin and pear. Mandarin and pear may be infested with aphids overwintered as viviparous females on birdseye, Veronica persica and henbit, Lamium amplexicaule.

The tolerable larval density of the diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella L.,DBM) in pre-heading and heading stages of summer cabbage was determined by applying pesticides of different efficacies. There was a negative linear relationship between the larval density at the pre-heading stage and the percentage of head initiation, and between the larval density and the cabbage yield. One hundred percent of head initiation permitted 5.0 DBM larvae per plant at pre-heading stage. At the heading stage, there was also a negative linear relationship between the larval density and the percentage of marketable heads with less than 3 holes. The larval density of 0.77 per plant resulted in 95% marketable heads.

Viability of tomato leaf mold fungus was tested in a glasshouse at 15-39°C under low humidity condition. The conidia obtained from potato sucrose agar quickly lost their activity within one month. Howevere the conidia formed on diseased leaves kept their activity for several months and also their pathogenicity for six months.
