A relationship between the occurrence of leaf yellowing of barley (Sanuki-hadaka) and its yield was investigated. There was a linear, negative correlation (P<0.01) between the degree of leaf yellowing and the yield. No correlation between the degree of mosaic on leaves caused by stripe virus and the yield was found. There was, however, a linear negative correlation (P<0.01) between the degree of root browning, which is closely related to browning root rot, and the yield regardless of the occurrence of yellow mosaic. A close correlation between root browning and the yield suggested that leaf yellowing might be closely related to browning root rot caused by Pythium spp. Shortening of the ear length was considered to be the most important factor involved in yield loss, based on the analyses of yield components and leaf yellowing.

Phytoseiulus persimilis ATHIAS-HENRIOT was released for controlling of Kanzawa spider mite, Tetranychus kanzawai, KISHIDA on strawberry in a greenhouse, but no controlling effects were found. It is probably because of low temperature in the greenhouse or a high density of T. kanzawai. Two smoking agents of pyrethroid affected T. kanzawai but did not P. persimilis. The distribution pattern of T. kanzawai was analyzed by Iwao's m-m method, they contagiously distributed at a low density and randomly distributed at a high density. The same analysis revealed that the distribution pattern of P. persimilis depended on that of the prey, T. kanzawai.

Rhizopus nigricans and two types (Type-O, Type-L) of yeast were isolated from soft-rotted fig fruits in Osaka. Fig fruit pulps inoculated with yeast (type-O) decayed and became sour, brownish and water-soaked. This symptom was different from that caused by R. nigricans. Adult vinegar flies, Drosophila melanogaster, were often observed on rotted fig in the field. The Type-O of yeast was also isolated from the legs of these flies. When the flies were introduced into a phytotron where fig trees were grown, the symptom which was similar to that caused by inoculation of the yeast appeared on fig fruits. These results indicated that yeast sp. is carried by adults D. melanogaster and causes soft rot of fig. This is the first report in Japan that yeast is associated with fig fruit rot. Thus we propose the name of souring rot of fig caused by yeast sp.

The control effect of E. formosa GAHAN on suppressing the density of two species of whiteflies, B. argentifolii and T. vaporariorum which infested together was investigted in tomato-cultivated greenhouses. The numbers of released B. argentifolii and T. vaporariorum adults were 10 & 0, 7 & 3, 5 & 5 in each greenhouse and 5 & 0 in a vinyl house (check plot), respectively. Hereafter 5 adults of E. formosa were released in each green-house. The results showed that the densities of B. argentifolii or the two species were suppressed to a low density in each E. formosa released plot compared with the check plot. It was concluded that E. formosa is effective to suppress the density of the two species of whiteflies which infested together on condition of releasing E. formosa at a low density of the whiteflies.
