In the northern part of Wakayama prefecture,
Thrips palmi cannot overwinter in a field because of low temperature, but can maintain the populations on eggplant in vinyl-houses. By late July,
T. palmi adults dispersed the eggplant fields within a distance of 800 m from the vinyl-houses in which the thrips overwintered, and within a distance of 1400 m from those by mid-August. After dispersal, thrips population densities in eggplant fields seemed to change, depending on control pressure of pesticides rather than on difference among locations. The thrips was more abundant in the margin than in the center of a field. The shelting fence around the eggplant field effectively prevented the thrips from immigrating into a field. To know thrips population levels, sampling method of counting the injured fruits was simpler than that of counting the insects on leaves. Therefore, growers had better moniter the percentage of injured fruits for control decision of the thrips.

A bacterial disease of the gerbera was found in winter at green house of Wakayama Prefecture. Causal bacterium was identified as
Pseudomonas cichorii (Swingle 1925) Stapp 1928. Optimum temperature of this disease was from 20°C to 25°C, and host range was gerbera (
Gerbera spp.), lettuce (
Lactuca sativa L.), chrysanthemum (
Chrysanthemum morifolium Ramat.), pea (
Pisum sativum L.) and melon (
Cucumis melo L.). Primary symptom was seemed to be started from the wet leaf surface with the dropping water from the inside roof of the green house.

In eggplant culture,
Thrips palmi inhibits the growth of the fruit and does a damage on commercial value. To control this pest, 0-ethyl 0-4-methylthiophenyl S-propyl phosphorodithioate (sulprofos) was sprayed to the eggplant of the X-shaped training (normal training method of eggplant), but the efficiency was not sufficient. Since it was supposed, on the other hand, that the palmette training was more effective for the insecticidal control of the thrips than the X-shaped training, we compared two types of training on the insecticidal control effect and the adhesion of the insecticide on leaves of the eggplant by spraying sulprofos in the open field.
Result are as follows: 1) In the control efficacy against larval thrips, the palmette training was better than the X-shaped training. 2) on the average quantity of adherent insecticide on the leaves, the palmette training (941.6 ng/cm
2) was larger than the X-shaped training (483.3 ng/cm
2). 3) On the value of variation coefficient of the quantity of adherent insecticide, the palmette training (47.4) was smaller than the X-shaped training (89.9).
These results indicate that the palmette training on this plant is more effective than the X-shaped training for the thrips control by spraying insecticide.

In this study, the utility of various types of traps were examined in the fields to know the occurence of the persimmon gall thrips which was the major insect pest to the Japanese persimmon. Since the thrips had not shown any preference for the special color of sticky traps, we used yellow colored traps which had been commonly used for other thrips. As the results, the yellow sticky ribbon trap (Kinryu
®) hung on a tree branch was highly efficient to catch the thrips. Also, the efficiency was increased by the yellow board sticky traps binding around a tree trunk or branch. The net trap placed 10m above the ground was suitable for the direct forecasting to catch the take-off period of the first generation adults because of its preciseness. In spite of its efficiency, the sticky suction trap was limited to use by its necessity of electric power supply. The transparent sticky band trap was available by binding around tree trunks of the cryptomeria, the hinoki cypress and so on, which were hibernacula of this thrips. Those traps should be chosen for practical use by their size, type, and number of arrangement in the field according to the purpose.

A rakkyo isolate of garlic latent virus (GLV) was purified from the infected broad bean plants by extraction in potassium-phosphate buffer at pH 7.5, clarification with diethyl ether, and differential and density-gradient centrifugation. An antiserum produced in a rabbit had a titer of 1/1,024 in immunosorbent electron microscopy and detected GLV in rakkyo leaf extracts by indirect ELISA using PBS-Tween or TTBS for extraction buffer and γ-globulin at a concentration of 0.5-1.0μg/ml. GLV could be detected from the rakkyo extracts diluted to 1/1,000. Dot Immunobinding assay (DIBA) using antiserum diluted to 1/4,000-1/8,000 and extraction buffer of TTBS was also applied to detect GLV. The virus was detected in rakkyo extracts diluted to 1/1,000 and in broad bean extracts diluted to 1/10,000-1/100,000. DIBA was considered a suitable method for the detection of GLV in a large-scale. Field survey by DIBA revealed that all the rakkyo samples collected in Tottori prefecture were infected with GLV even though they were without any visible symptoms. Rakkyo samples from other prefectures were shown to be highly infected at a rate of 92.5%-100%. Division of scaly bulbs of the reinfected virus-freed rakkyo plants was decreased by 20%-33%. Virus infection also decreased bulb production in those plants.
