    Reports are not seen up to date which discussed on the precision and accuracy of surface roughness measured by beginners of mechanical engineering course student.
    In this paper, the precision and accuracy of surface roughness which were measured by beginners of mechanical engineering course student are discussed.
    The surfaces of steel specimens are finished by shaping or grinding respectively.
    The dispersions in the data of four hundred beginners were classified into the measurements errors and mistakes, and analyzed with respect to the precision and accuracy.
    The following results were obtained.
    1) Precision and accuracy of the measurement data on the surface roughness by grinding are particularly worse than that of by shaping.
    2) Mistakes have been increased year by year. One of the reason can be considered the poor ability of beginners to reading mistakes and macroscopic estimations.
    3) Beginners have uncertain judgements on the distinction of the errors, and so most of mistakes are passed easily.
    4) The instrument which have been function of analog and digital should be used for beginners to avoid the mistakes of measurement.

    The establishment of technology for closely controlling the distribution of raw materials in a sintering plant has been gaining importance in order to assure the stability and flexibility of operations. The density measurement of the raw materials as charged is considered essential to this end. However a conventional γ-ray density gauge has the difficulty to be in on-line use because of its poor accuracy in case the measurement condition such as the distance from the gauge to the materials is changed.
    Theoretical study and basic simulations to develop a new γ-ray density gauge made it clear that the density and the distance can be known simultaneously by detection of Compton scattered γ-rays at two different positions. Therefore the gauge has a γ-ray source and two detectors set at different positions. Experimental results show that the gauge can achieve an accuracy of ±0.02g/cm3 over the density range of 1.6 to 1.9g/cm3 and the distance range of 8 to 10cm for a 60sec counting of Compton scattered γ-rays.
    This gauge has been in practical use at Kimitsu No. 3 sintering plant since 1992, contributing to the distribution control.

    A fluidic oscillator type flow meter for domestic gas meter must have a simple structure suitable for mass production, and it must measure gas accurately in wide range of flow rate at low pressure loss.
    A simple fluidic oscillator with only one element (target) was proposed by one of authors.
    An attempt was made to improve this new type of fluidic oscillator aiming at replacement of conventional membrane type gas meters.
    Our research proved that measuring accuracy can be improved in two different ways:
    1) Optimizing shape and dimension of oscillator
    2) Incorporating a flow straightener to make a inlet jet two-dimensional.
    Obtained performances are as follows: Linearity less than ±0.8% of reading within flow range 0.15∼5.0m3/h (fluidic flow meter range), reproducibility less than ±0.2% of reading.

    This paper describes a theory, algorithm, and experimental results of a new 3-D sound source localization system which is based on the spatio-temporal derivative method applied to acoustic signals.
    The principle is outlined as follows. We observe the sound field through amplitude f and its spatiotemporal gradients fx, fy, ft of a single point. An instantaneous distribution of time-varying vectors fx, fy, ft, f in a 4-D gradient space is classified according to its degree of orderness. Each orderness is theoretically related to constraints on possible source locations. Under this classification, we obtain an unambiguous 3-D location of a single source under a second degree of orderness and a co-existing line or plane of double sources under a first degree of orderness.
    We applied the principle to a sound source visualizer system by which a possibility map of the source locale is accumulated and superposed realtimely on TV images. By several experiments, this system is shown to be able to localize multiple wideband sources such as white noises and human voices while discriminating a number of them.

    In this paper, the stochasic bang-bang control problem of maximizing the reachability probability that the controlled state variables reach to a specified target manifold within the finite time interval is considered.
    The optimal control synthesis is reduced to solving for the nonlinear parabolic equation with boundary condition. The fundamental solution is then determined using the Girsanov transformation. The boundary functions defined on he boundary can be obtained by making use of the linear simultaneous integral equations obtained by the boundary conditions and then the probability function φu is determined by this boundary functions. Finally the optimal control variable is determined after the determination of probability function from the condition that the maximum is achieved in the parabolic equation. Some optimal switching curves are obtained for various parameters in the control time intervals.

    In this paper, we use the fixed point theorem to generate a set of sufficient conditions which confine the solutions of weak non-linear differential equations to a stable integral manifold. The obtained conditions are used in the solution of a weak non-linear optimal regulator problem. The necessary conditions for optimal control laws are expressed by the weak non-linear differential equations with state variable x and Lagrange's variable λ. By using the solution S of the Ricatti equation, the sufficient conditions for obtaining the solution λ(t) in a feedback form, λ(t)=Sx(t)+p(x(t)), are derived from the result of the integral manifold. The method for finding an approximate solution of p(x) in an analyltic form such as a Fourier series is introduced, and a new calculation algorithm is presented which applies the Newton method and other techniques. Simulations using the algorithm exhibit favorable results.

    This paper shows a synthesis of LQG control system with frequency-shaped weights (FWLQG) in which a state-estimator is added to LQR with frequency-shaped weights (FWLQR). It is seen from the robustness analysis of FWLQR and FWLQG in the frequency domain that the frequency-shaped weight for the controlled variable is useful to improve the response property and the disturbance rejection, while the weight for the input can give the loop transfer function a specified roll-off property. According to the consideration, a synthesis of FWLQG compensator is shown. In this synthesis, the loop transfer recovery is also included to recover reduced control performance with adding a state-estimator.
    In a numerical example of a one-link flexible arm, both FWLQG and LQG syntheses are applied to the second-order nominal plant in which only the first vibration mode of the arm is considered. FWLQG compensator which both frequency-shaped weights for the controlled variable and the input give good response property and stability robustness. That is, more exact plant in which five vibration modes of the arm are included can be stabilized by FWLQG compensator and not by LQG one.

    Unimodality of a performance function with respect to adjustable parameters is essential for convergence of algorithm to the global optimal solution in learning optimization problems. We study this problem for the linear time-invariant (stationary) dynamical system with the quadratic cost in signals. The unimodality does not necessarily hold with respect to adjustable gains in feedback part. We establish this unimodality under the case that the adjustable gains construct the state feedback or dynamical output feedback such that the optimized system is equivalent to the optimal LQ (linear-quadratic) or LQG (linear-quadratic-Gaussian) regulator.

    A design method of an AC motor variable speed control system, which is made up of a power source, a PWM converter, a PWM inverter and an AC motor, is described. And how to decide the DC Link voltage reference is described. Main purpose of this research is to design a system which satisfies the following control objectives; motor speed control, PM motor vector control, DC voltage control and input power factor control. Optimal regulator theory is suitable for control system design such a control system with multiple control objectives.
    And in this paper, one method how the DC voltage reference should be decided, the modulation ratio optimized control, is proposed. That is, the DC voltage which satisfies the condition that the PWM modulation ratio is lower than 0.95 and higher than 0.85 is obtained. By this manner, not only the quick motor speed response but also the suppression of total harmonic distortion factors (THD) in source current and losses in semi-conductor swichting devices are realized.
    Simulation results of the proposed control system, are shown with discussions.

    In this paper, we discuss a stabilization of a parallel-type double inverted pendulum system. First, analysing the derived state space equation of the pendulum system and comparing with other pendulum systems which are sires-type and single-sype, we make qualitative characteristics clear. Especially, we show that there exists some difficulty of stabilization in the parallel-type, caused by the natural frequency ratio of two pendulums. Based on the above results, we synthesize some controllers which are constructed by a state feedback gain and full state observer, and confirm that the pendulum system can be stabilized in both simulation and experiment.

    This paper treats deadlocks and liveness of the closed-loop discrete event system GSCSM|f consisting of a strongly connected state machine (SCSM), a subclass of Petri nets, and a state-feedback which realizes the mutually exclusive control. The GSCSM|f is not always live even if the original SCSM is live, and deadlocks exist in GSCSM|f. A deadlock marking is newly defined and the D-net is proposed to detect these deadlock markings. Then the relation between deadlock freeness and liveness is analysed. Under an assumption, it is shown that the existence of the place set called DPS in D-net is the necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of deadlock markings, and that deadlock freeness is equivalent to the liveness. Furthermore, defining LPS as a special class of DPS, we show that if DPS/LPS exists, the sufficient condition for liveness is that the initial token count |M0| satisfies the equation 1≤|M0|≤min|DPS/LPS|-1.

    The genetic algorithm (GA) is a method for approximate optimization simulating the process of natural evolution, and it has been successfully applied to several optimization problems which are difficult to solve exactly by conventional methods of the mathematical programming. This paper proposes a neighborhood model of GA (NGA) where the selection is executed locally in a neighborhood of each population. The objectives of the NGA are to improve search in the GA by suppressing favorably the premature convergence phenomena, and at the same time, to reduce computational time by implementing it on a parallel computer (transputer). In the paper, we confirm effectiveness of the NGA through several computational experiments to a jobshop scheduling problem where its ability in computational time and quality of solutions is investigated.

    A scheduling method has been developed for steelmaking process, in which the problem is formulated in the minimum cost flow problem and the solution is decided using the sequential search approach. Sequential search algorithm is one of the well-known optimization method, but it often results in local optimization. Above all, for an integer problem as scheduling, which has a complex discrete structure, a sequential search approach is not available in many cases. To cope with this difficulty such methods as simulated-annealing and genetic algorithm are recently attempted, but the processing time should be much shorter for some actual application.
    On the other hand, in the development of the actual application systems, it is often effective to utilize heuristics and to find a feasible semi-optimal solution. In this paper, a new method is proposed which contains heuristic rules in the process of sequential search. Many heuristic neighborhoods are defined in the form of flow modification patterns, and are selected to modify the network flow using heuristics of finding a good solution in the proper scheduling problem. The developed method was applied to the scheduling system in a steel plant, and the effectiveness of this approach was revealed in the actual application.

    Here, we compare the acoustic methods named cross-correlation method and auto-correlation method to locate pinhole sites in gas-pipeline. The cross-correlation method is effective for pipelines with greater acoustic damping whereas the auto-correlation method is effective for those with less acoustic damping.

    We consider the robust stability of a hybrid adaptive control system in the presence of bounded disturbances. This algorithms are attractive from robustness considerations, but there exist few studies so far. In this paper we derive a sufficient condition for robust stability of the hybrid adaptive systems subjected to bounded disturbances. This condition explains the fact that the hybrid adaptive algorithms are more robust than continuous time ones.

    This note is concerned with direct design of a robust second order controller for linear mechanical systems whose motion equations can be described by second order differential equations with symmetric, positive (semi) definite coefficient matrices. Only the displacement measurements are supposed to be available and the sensor/actuator are only required to be collocated in a wide sense. Conditions are made clear under which the overall closed loop system is guaranteed to be robustly stable. The obtained results are a supplement to the paper by Juang and Phan3).
