    This paper challenges online stiffness evaluation of red blood cell (RBC) by using both a micro channel and a high speed vision system. When a RBC passes through a micro channel, the passing time mainly depends upon its stiffness, diamter, and the pressure difference between the input and output ports of the channel. In other words, the stiffness of cell can be evaluated by measuring these three parameters. With the assistance of high speed vision system, we succeded in evaluating the stiffness of RBC with less than 5[msec/cell]. The biggest advantage for utilizing a high speed vision is that we can know exactly what is actually happening in the channel, while it is really hard for other approaches. We also introduced the stiffness evaluation map, by which we can compare the stiffness of RBCs of patients with those of healthy persons.

    In this study, the optimal control problem of nonlinear parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs) is investigated. Optimal control of nonlinear PDEs is an open problem with applications that include fluid, thermal, biological, and chemically-reacting systems. Model predictive control with a fast numerical solution method has been well established to solve the optimal control problem of nonlinear systems described by ordinary differential equations. In this study, we develop a design method of the model predictive control for nonlinear systems described by parabolic PDEs. Our approach is a direct infinite dimensional extension of the model predictive control method for finite-dimensional systems. The objective of this paper is to develop an efficient algorithm for numerically solving the model predictive control problem of nonlinear parabolic PDEs. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by numerical simulations.

    Wheeled mobile robots are known as one of nonholonomic constrained systems and many control strategies have been proposed. As one topic of them, image-based control of mobile robots has been paid much attention because of its robustness against modeling or calibration errors. In this paper, two image-based path following control methods are proposed to follow a target curve marked on the ground. One is a basic controller based on a Lyapunov's direct method and the other is designed by an inverse optimal approach and has robustness to a class of uncertainties. Some simulations and experiments are performed to show their performance.

    For large structures such as towers of suspension bridges or cable-stayed bridges, we often need to suppress wind-induced vibration for safety. Especially in the construction stage, the structures have a low tolerance than completed ones. This paper discusses the active vibration dampers used to suppress wind-induced vibration of a tower of a suspension bridge during a construction. The active damper was used to suppress wind-induced vibration in multiple modes predicted by wind-tunnel test. The controller design of the dampers is based on H robust control theory. At each erection step, we measured dynamic properties of towers to adjust parameters of the controller using active vibration exciters. The measured dynamic properties of active controlled structures are compared with those of non-controlled structures. The analysis of free vibration shows the suppression performance of active damper as expected in the controller design.
