The aim of this study is to develop an analyzing technique for balancing ability of aged people. A measurement system was composed of a force plate and a solenoide and could measure postural sway to sudden acceleration disturbance. Experiments were performed with athletes, youths, and aged subjects. Four order AR model were applied to the measured postural sways. From characteristic equations of AR model, damping time, damping frequency, and power rate of components of the postural sway were obtained by the component decomposition method. Experimental results showed that aged subjects have a long damping time of the highest power component. Thus, damping time of the component was proposed as an index of the balancing ability. This index was examined by comparison with indices from walking experiments on a balance beam. It was concluded that balancing ability of aged people could be evaluated by the damping time.
