Horton (1983) considered all Japanese specimens of Encalypta streptocarpa that she studied were misidentified, and they should be called as E. procera Bruch. The same author concluded that E. streptocarpa was not distributed in Japan and North America. We carefully examined all available specimens collected from Japan that had been identified as either E. streptocarpa or E. procera. These specimens were carefully compared with those from Europe, and we reached the conclusion that all Japanese specimens determined as E. streptocarpa are correctly identified, except one specimen which was E. vulgaris.
