A three-dimensional (3D) geologic modeling system is useful for solving social problems related to geology. In order to develop the 3D geologic modeling system that enables us to use and share various geological information effectively, we need to understand the current trends and issues involved in the existing systems comprehensively. The present paper reports the results of a comparative investigation on domestic and foreign 3D geologic modeling system based on geologic boundary surface, focusing on the following four technical elements; (i) basic data for the estimation of geologic boundary surfaces, (ii) estimation method of geologic boundary surfaces, (iii) determination method of geologic distribution and (iv) visualization and storing method of the model. Further based on the investigation, several issues are discussed toward the development of 3D geologic modeling system that realizes a higher-degree application of geologic information. Finally it is concluded that we need to advance (i) diversification of input data and development of an algorithm for effective use of available data, (ii) preparation of various estimation methods, simplification of calculation parameters and recommendation of standard parameters, (iii) improvement of logical procedure to define geologic distribution and (iv) release of data format and standardization of data format useful to understand and replicate the modeling processes.
