Ground-source heat pump (GSHP) system is one of energy conservation systems. In order to use the system efficiently, evaluation of potential of GSHP in major plains and basins throughout Japan is required. We have reviewed the evaluation indicators of GSHP potential proposed in previous studies. Databases and numerical information used to estimate the indicators were organized. It was found that many studies suggested three types of indicators for evaluation of the GSHP potential, which are geological setting, groundwater environment and thermal demand of the area. Especially groundwater environment is estimated by using GIS and existing information of wells, as well as from the numerical simulation of groundwater flow and heat transport. Shallow subsurface thermal properties were considered to be important in some studies, but these properties have not been sufficiently-compiled in Japan yet. Databases of groundwater information should also be additionally developed with the thermal properties because the shallow subsurface thermal properties are also influenced by groundwater environment.
