    We systematically reorganized available knowledge on formative processes of a geological terrane and its bearing uranium resources and designed a knowledge base for a future expert system, which helps researchers to estimate the formative processes using field geological and experimental observations. This knowledge base has frame structure and is composed of 17 main frames. We describe their definitions, structure, and properties and 35 logical relationships between the frames. We also apply the basic knowledge of formative process of a real uranium mine into the knowledge base and show a conceptual simulation of inference process using the knowledge base.

    To facilitate the common usage and the common ownership of the geological and geographical public data, we developed a data file server system on the Tsukuba Research Center Network of AIST (Agency of Industrial Science and Technology, MITI) .
    Because the size of each data file is big, read-only and the total size of the files exceeds 1.5 Gbyte, we adopted an automatic CD-ROM exchanger system as the external data storage. There are so many users on the network that we can not make an entry for each user. So, we introduced Anonymous ftp service into the data file server system.
    The system shows the ability of the common usage and the common ownership of the data without registration of user IDs and that the data can be secured against destruction. Because the transmission rate is high (about 440Kbyte/sec) and the time for administration can be reduced, the system may be efficient for a data server system of near future.

    This study aims to design a small, rule-based, expert system, which helps a user to estimate emplacement mechanisms of volcaniclastic rocks. To develop this system, an expert shell Intelligent Developer (Hyperpress Publishing Corp.) and a Macintosh computer (Apple Computer Inc.) were used and a system prototype Volcaniclast was made. Volcaniclast is composed of an inference engine, a rule base, a fact base, and a man-machine interface module. The rule base has 76 IF..THEN.. rules and the fact base has 11 facts. The interface module enables friendly, graphical, dialog-based environment for consultation.Although many unreal sub-answers are proposed, Volcaniclast gives a true answer with the highest certainty factor, when a typical set of field data are inputted. For this reason, Volcaniclast can at leastbe used for undergraduate students to learn fundamental knowledge in field volcanology.

    This retrieval program can be used to simultaneously access a literature database consisting of text files in three different formats. The basic features are as follows;
    (1) The program is tailored to simultaneously retrieve files from the GEOLIS.FD, the JSSMFE da tabase and also the database files developed by the author.
    (2) By using the data address information, the program calculates a function to facilitate random access of text files.
    (3) The retrieved information can be stored in a document (text) format data file.
    (4) Facility for sorting of data is also incorporated.
