ISDB-T which uses OFDM as modulation scheme has been adopted for Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting (DTTB) system in Japan. It has the advantage against multipass, and Single Frequency Network (SFN) using broadcast signal is considered. But the re-transmitting signal is degraded by the coupling-multipass interference from transmitting antenna to receiving antenna. We have been developing the loop canceller to cancel not only the coupling-multipass but also other multipass interference. This paper describes the result of testing the equipment.

The stochastic diffusion is an optimization method to minimize the potential function in the MAP-based motion estimations. This paper applies the stochastic diffusion to the MAP-based simultaneous motion estimation and object segmentation in the hierarchical structure. According to the experiments, the proposed method can extract multiple objects with decreasing memory and computational burden which is the main problems in the stochastic diffusion.

This paper aims at the fine registration of multi-viewpoint range date captured by the laser-radar range finder. We propose a registration method based on the geometrical correspondence of planar surfaces extracted from the multi-viewpoint range date. The method provides the very good result that one viewpoint data are almost perfectly matched with another viewpoint data by geometrically transforming them.

This paper presents a framework for building realistic virtual environment from geometry-based approach. We use 3D scanner and digital camera to obtain range data and texture images. Here, we describe an algorithm to integrate the range data and the texture images obtained. First, specify some feature points manually, then do a camera calibration based on Tsai's algorithm to estimate camera parameters. Finally, a texture mapping is conducted using the estimated camera parameters. We show the realistic 3D model built using the proposed method.

The paper presents the improvements in color appearance by Retinex vision model. The image is processed based on space-to-pixel relations not on the conventional pixel-to-pixel. Two different models were tested. One is center-surround and other is multi-resolution model. Both models worked to eliminate the spatial non-uniformities in the scene. Especially the multi-resolution Retinex resulted in the natural renditions in color and tone better than the center-surround Retinex.

In this paper, a progressive switching adaptive Wiener Filter (PS/AWF) method based on the Gaussian mixture distribution model(GMM) for images is proposed as a restoration filter for the degraded images by impulse noise. In designing Wiener filter(WF), estimation of covariance of original image becomes key problem. In this method, an universal adaptive WF is designed, based on universal GMM determined with varies training images. Simulation results show that proposed method improves restoration performance compared with conventional adaptive filers.

This paper describes a very high compression MPEG-2 encoding scheme for distributing HDTV programs at a bit-rate around 11Mbps to be applied for digital terrestrial broadcasting service. As one of very effective encoding technologies required to maintain a satisfactory picture quality at such a low bit-rate, an optimum mode selection is proposed to be introduced into MPEG-2. From extensive evaluation results for various motion pictures, it is confirmed that the proposed optimum MPEG-2 encoding scheme gives a significant coding gain against conventional encoding scheme.

This paper proposes the motion detection method based on evaluation of coding bits and macroblock type. Generally speaking, if the macroblock type is "flat" or "edge", block-matching method chooses a lot of candidate motion vectors. It is possible that the most suitable vectors are not chosen. So we prepared the evaluation function for expressing coding bits, and we detected the motion vectors by minimizing it. As a result of computer simulation, we confirmed that subjective picture quality of proposed method improved in comparison with that of TM5.

As an objective picture quality measurement method without reference, the authors propose a method for estimating PSNR by use of embedded invisible markers. Invisible markers embedded by manipulating WHT coefficient after spreading spectrum of the original pictures, are detected from the decoded pictures and the PSNR is estimated from false detection rate of the markers. The proposed method can be applicable for high quality video transmission since the degradation caused by the markers is quite small.
