In recent years, the number of complaints about odor from livestock farming have counted 1500 to 1700 per year in the official reports. Though the number of farms have decreased, the average livestock number per farm have increased and legal control on odor have been intensified, and consequently the rate of farms which cause complaints have been gradually rising. On the other hand, preparation or repair of waste treatment facilities and improvement of waste management have been promoted, based on the law, and this seems to dissolve odor problem in many cases. In addition, countermeasure technologies have been developed, and various support system, including supply of information or advice to dissolve the problem, have been prepared.

In order to recover and utilize the ammonia, which is a bi-product in the process of composting, we developed a novel composting system using vacuum-type aeration. In this system, it is possible to recover ammonia via ducts arranged at the bottom of raw materials during the vacuum aeration. The ammonia recovered in this system are reacted with phosphoric or sulfuric acid in ammonia-recover equipment and can be utilized as nitrogen fertilizers. When these fertilizers were used for cultivation of melons and paddy rice, it was demonstrated that the effects of these fertilizers were equal to chemical fertilizers.

Offensive odor emission associated with livestock industry is primary problem, and ammonia emissions during the composting are concentrated. This research targeted the reduction of odor emitted during composting from the fermentation reactors (1^st and 2^nd weeks) which emits approximately 90% of total emission by the absorption treatment using finished composts as an absorbent in low cost. Ammonia reduction rates were 98% and the adsorption treatment is effective in eliminating sulfur compounds and volatile fatty acids. The finished composts that used as absorbent content high nitrogen and the relative efficiency of high N compost showed 70%.

Stockbreeders can not set up deodorizers because they are too much expensive. So we have been developing high ability and low cost biological deodorization system using pumice. The cost of pumice is about 20% in comparison with rock wools, and it is available for long years use. This system can accept about 400g anmonium-N/m³ of pumice every day.

Nutritional management can substantially contribute to a reduction in urinary nitrogen excretion and ammonia emission from pig slurry. It is generally agreed that feeding low crude protein diets supplemented with synthetic amino acid lowers or high non-starch polysaccharide (NSP) diet lower urea excretion by pigs, resulting in lower ammonia emission. The manipulation of the pigs’ feeding may be considered as the first intervention in this chain : ”reduction of ammonia emission from pig production systems starts from the pigs by means of nutrition”. The experiments described in this paper tested the most effectiveness of the combination of low crude protein diet and high NSP feedstuffs to reduce ammonia emission from pig slurry by alternating dietary composition.

Most of commercially-used gas odorants in LP gas are sulfur-containing compounds, which generate sulfur oxide (SOx) in their combustion. In addition, sulfur is usually a catalyst poison in LP gas-to-hydrogen system for fuel cell. Here we report development of sulfur-free gas odorants. A number of oxygen-containing compounds and hydrocarbons are assessed in point of quality and intensity of odor, biological safety, and chemical stability. It was proved that 1-pentyne and 2-hexyne are alternative gas odorants.
