Measuring the odor component of housing is beneficial to the improvement of the living environment.

In addition, measurement of indoor odor, gas chromatography mass spectrometry-olfactometry and sensory test is used.

In this paper we describe the guidelines for indoor odor investigation. And report on the measurement of odor at home with old washing machine and dirty bathroom.

Implementation of odor control in an indoor environment involves the following steps : investigation of odor-generating conditions (localization of the odor-generating source, estimation of the odor-generating substance, and determination of the amount of odor generated), control of odor generation, shut-down of the transmission path, and reduction of the discomfort level. I determined the factors that seemed to be important for smooth progress of this procedure. For reducing the discomfort level, I explained a deodorization principle and general features of ventilation, adsorption, absorption, sensory deodorization, and oxidization (ozone-type, plasma-type, photocatalyst-type) to facilitate the selection of a suitable deodorization method. Additionally, I explained the introduction and utilization methods of the equation enabling a rough prediction, at the design stage, of the introduction effect of an air-cleaner (deodorization apparatus) with a deodorizing function.

The main cause of bad smell is generated, by the action of bacteria. Proteins and lipids are broken down by the action of bacteria, many of the unpleasant odor generated.

In the living environment can completely eliminate unpleasant odors is impossible. Therefore, it is important that we accept the unpleasant odors in daily life.
