For the purpose of clarifying the actual use of reflective materials to prevent traffic accidents, we conducted a survey of elementary, junior high and high school students in Kumamoto Prefecture and received 458 responses. The older the student, the later they tend to return home. Survey respondents reported near-miss accidents in all types of weather conditions, and many of these near-misses were experienced not only during twilight hours but also during daylight hours. These results suggest the need for measures to increase the visibility of people in all weather conditions and at all times of the day. Awareness of reflective materials among respondents was about 80%, but only 45-54% of them actually owned such items. In addition, while about 80% of elementary, junior high and high school students feel that reflective materials are effective in preventing traffic accidents, 61-64% of junior high and high school students and 40% of elementary school students do not wear reflective materials during twilight hours. Survey results also suggest that reflective materials are not being used effectively since some respondents have been involved in near-misses when walking even while owning such materials.
