    1. The flower types found in Cosmos bipinnatus CAV. can be classified into the following four main groups: single-fiowered types, double-fiower.ed types, malform-flowered types and malformdouble mixed types (see Fig. 1). 2. The single-flowerd type, when inbred, does not segregate any of the other types. 3. The non-petalous type (Np type), when inbred, always produces the non-petalous only, while the other malform-flowered or the doubleflowered, when inbred or crossed to one another, segregate into all types, including single, double and malform-flowered types. 4. The crossing of the non-petalous to the normal single-flowered produces every kind of flower types in F2, which means that the non-petalous involves the factors for doubleness or malformiity. Many slightly-doubled plants appear in F2, which segregate a few highly-doubled plarts in the following generation.

    Seedlings of 286 varieties or strains of various species belonging to Trib. Hordeeae (Agropyrot2, Elylnus, Hordeum, Triticum, Aegilops, Aegilotricum., Lolium), Bromeae (Bromus) and Agrosteae (Aue;ea and Holcus) including 105 strains of cultivated oats were tested with Puccilcia coroleata CORDA f. sp. Avenae 231. The experimental results are summarized as follows : 1) 10 species of Agropyron, 5 species of Elymus, 15 species of Triticum, 5 selections of Aegilotricum, 2 selections of Agrotricum, 2 species of Lolium, 17 species of Bro, , tus and I species of Holcus were found to be highly resistant or immu.ne to Puccinia coronata f. sp. Avenae 231. 2) Among 36 varieties or strains of 9 species of Hordeum, I strain of Hordeum agriocrithon var. eu-agriocrithon, I strain of H. Gussoneanum, 4 varieties or strains of H. spo, etaneum and two varieties or strains of H. vulgare were resistant (Infection type 1), while the other were highly resistant' or immune.

    The behavior of pollen and pollen-tube between 1-8 hours after pollination was reported in the previous pa.per (TATEBE 1950). The present paper describes the behavior between 10-30 minutes after pollination. Results obtained may be summarized as follows : 1. Pollen grains on stigmas in all mating combinations germinated well (table . 1.). However, the total number of pollen grains on stigmas were few in some of the long-styled flowers and also in short-styled flowers generally. It may be due to the reason that most of the pollen grains which failed to germinate had been washed off in the treatment of fixing and staining. Consequently, it seems very likely that in some cases the actual percentage of pollen germination was somewhat 10wer than that of the data. The percentage of empty grains which had exhausted their contents into their tubes was lower in short-styled flowers, and especially in the illegitimate unions. Various experiments of pollen germination on artificial media were tried without success.

    It has been found in cyanic strains that ant, hocyan appeared at certain stage during bud development. But the bud development of cyanic strain was same to that of acyanjc strains, in which anthocyan did not appear till infiorescence. The refore, the difference of anthocyan appearance between cyanic and acyanic strains may be due to some physiological phenomena during bud development stage. These experiments were carried out in order to clarify the mechanism of anthocyan appearance from the physiological and ontogenical standpoint of view using three different straials ... Purple, Salmon and White I in petunia hybrida. The distribution of anthocyan in the petal is confined only in epidermal cells, in which the appearance of'anthocyan is accompanied by the development of papilla. The bud usually grows very rapidly and it has also been found that the rate of respiration increases remarkably in cyanic strains at the stage of anthocyan appearance.

    1. In this present report, the result of cytological studies on the maturation division of PMC's of 6 interspecific hybrids *(ScxSV, SVxSc, Scx Sm, Sm X Sc, Sc x Sa, Sa X Sc) in genus Secale has been surnmerized. 2. In every combination, at the heterotyphase metaphase in PMC's of Fl plant, 5-7 bivalents and 0-4 univalents were observed. The freque, ncy of bivalents and univalents in the PMC's were shown in Table 1, and as shown in the Tabie the case of 7 in the number of bivalents appeared to be the mode. 3. Tri-, tetra-and pentavalents were rarely observed besides bivalents at the heterotypic metaphase.

    This paper deals with the theoretical construction of a selection index for single individuals on the basis of individual measurements, Iine means and line-group means in a hybrid population of autogamous plants. Let the genetic va.1ue of an individual be Y and its phenotypic value be x1, the mean value of the line involving the individua] be x2, and the mean value of the group of the lines be x3. Weight factors to be given to x1, x2 and x3 for construc-ting a selectioh index X are denoted as b1, b2 and b3.

    The experiment was conducted in order to estimate th.e h.eritability of various characters and genotypic correlations between them. The characteristics of the parents, Kiku-naga and Sendainaga No. 1, are shown in Table 1. Both parental varietiesa F1 and F2 hybrids, 45 lines of F3 and as many of F4 obtained by self=Pollination were examined in a randomized block arrangement with two replications. The charcters observed were : number of days from seeding to flowering, plant height, stem diameter, number of fruits per pl.ant and index of frtlit shape. Basing on the means of 7 plants per line in a block, variance and covariance analyses were carried out. The experimental results may be summarized as follows.

    In poptilations of hybrids between distantly related varieties of rice, some tendency is found toward restriction of recombination of independent genes. This may possibly be due to the effect of "Gametic-Development genes" and in later generations to low propagation rates of plants with recombined genotypes. Theoretical considera-tions of this phenomenon and an analysis of some actual data are reported in this paper. 1. When two indepent genes are linked respectively with G. D. genes Xl-xl and x2-X"" which belong to the same set, recombination of the two independent genes will be restricted in a definite In the F2 of several crosses between manner. distant varieties of rice, the expected phenomenon was found. The segregation ratios could be fully explained by assuming a set of G. D. genes linked to the genes under observation. 2. Considering a set of G.D. genes as stated above, frequencies of combinations of two pairs of genes in the Fn generation were computed by theoretical formulas. The change of the frequencies of genotypes due to differences in propagation rate was also formulated.

    Experiment was carried out in 1952 on the varietal difference of the effect of high temp. upon the ripening period of soy-beans. Varieties used were Sango-wase (Kumamoto), Nakate-hadaka (Hokkaido), Kisaya (Kagoshima), Norin No. 2 (Ibaraki). Iwate Noi 2 (Iwate). Shiro-hachi'koku, (Yarnagata) & IVlejiro No. I (Fukushima). Sangowase & Kisaya are the veri(ties of short ripening period, Nakate-hadaka, Norin No. 2 and Shiro hachikoku are the varieties of middle ripening period a.nd lwate No. 2 and Mejiro No. I belongto the varieties of long ripening period. The plants were grown in soil by pot culture and half of them were grown in high temp. con dition(about 6'C higher than natural temp. cond.) during the period from blooming to maturity, and the rest were grown under the natural temp.condition. Moreover in both conditions, the natural day-length of 10 hrs day-length and 8 hrs day-length were maintained. The results obtained may be summarized as follows :

    1. In Digitaria the spikelets are very small, so some experiments on the bui.k emasculation by hot livater were carried out in order to facilitate the hybridization. 2. In Crab Grass (D. ciliaris PERS.), the blocming was supressed on the day after the treatment. For the practical use, the treatment at 46'C from 5-1.5 minutes was found proper for the spikelets blooming on two days after the treatment. 3. In Smooth Crab Grass(D. ischap-walee MUHL.), the blooming was not absolutely supressed on the day-after the treatment. For the practical use, the treatment at 45'C from 5-lO minutes and at 44C for 10 minutes were found proper for the spikel.ets to bloom on the day after tho treatment. 4. In the natural condition, the blooming in three species of Dig'itaria -"vas from 0 to 4 o'clock in the midnight. The experiments on the control of the blooming time were carried out in all those species. 5. During the night, the pl.ants were kept at high temperature at about 30'C and were illuminated by the electric light. From the next morning, the darkness was maintained for them and temperature was gradually reduced to about 20'C. In this way the plants came into bloom in the daytime on the same day from 13 to 17 o'clock.

    An analysis of grazin g yearlings in the forest was made at the Hidaka Experimental Farm of the Hokkaido University. The growth period of the yearlings was divided into three periods as mentioned below January to April (period l), May to August (period 2) and September to December (period). The years correlation was obtained as 0.53 between 1 and 2, 0.22 between 2 and 3, and 0. 30 between 1 and 3. The genetic influences to each of three periods are II, 69 and 28 per cent of the variation in gains, respectively. These obtained results agree with the weight of foals affected by underfeeding in winter grazing with a prompt recovering in spring. The period 2 may be an optimum time to make an estimation of the selection regarding genetic superiority of the gains. The analysis reveals that there are some environmental correlation between the three periods concerned here, and also in determing the gain of foals, the hereditary element plays a predominant role.
