In order to prevent the spreading of pine wilt disease in forests of the world, wood packing of non-manufactured coniferous wood from Japan to China and EU countries is to be treated to kill pine wood nematodes. A preliminary experiment was carried out to elucidate the effects of wood preservatives themselves on nematode mortality. Pine wood nematodes (Bursaphelenchus xylophilus) were immersed in an aqueous solution of 0.05, 0.11, 0.22, 0.43, and 0.65% as CuAz (copper-boron-azole) active ingredients or 0.09, 0.19, 0.37, 0.74 and 1.11 % as DDAC (didecyl dimethyl ammonium chloride) active ingriedients for 24 hours. Mortality of the nematodes reached 100% after 3 hours in 0.09% of DDAC and 0.43% of CuAz, respectively. Both preservatives have a potential to kill pine wood nematodes within pine wood when timber is fully treated with pressure treatment.
