Durability of Sugi (Cryptomeria japonica D.Don) Hearwood Dried at High Temperature against the Brown-rot Fungus Fomitopsis palustris

Durability of Sugi (Cryptomeria japonica D. Don) heartwood dried over 100°C was investigated with laboratory decay test. As the results of the decay test with Fomitopsis palustris, mass losses of the specimens from Sugi heartwood, which were air dried, or kiln-dried at 60 to 70'C, were approximately 3 %, while those of the heartwood dreid at high-temperature were 27 to 35%. Thus, decrease in durabilty of Sugi heartwood by high-temperature drying was suggested. Therefore, service life of high-temperature dried wood must be clarified by field tests.

Termiticidal performance of the entomogenous fungus Metarhizium anisopliae ESC 1 was investigated in laboratory tests, using the commercial formulation "Bio-Blast^TM". It contains conidia of M. anisopliae ESC 1 .
The soil treated with conidia of this strain showed strong termiticidal performance to Cop-totermes formosanus and Reticulitermes speratus. The termiticidal performance was enhanced as the number of conidia in the treated soil increased. In the temperature range from 25°C to 30°C, this strain germinated and grew well, resulting in high termiticidal performance.
