We propose to evaluate the deterioration using an inexpensive and easy-to-handle testingdevice that utilizes a deterioration diagnostic method in which a driver pin is attached to force gauge. We investigated the pin penetration depth using various types of driver pins and wood moisture contents, in order to evaluate degree of deterioration by this method. Squared timbers(undried material) of Sugi(Japanese cedar,
Cryptomeria japonica D. Don), sourced from Akita Prefecture, were prepared, and six types of moisture contenttest materials (e.g. 15%, 30%, 50%, 100%, 150%, or 200%) were sampled from each material. We conducted the examination in penetration tests with universal testing machineand Pilodyn other than penetration tests with force gauge compared them. As a result, there was a high positive correlation between the penetration depth with force gaugeand Pilodyn, and was a significant difference at the 1% level in a shape of pins and load combinations. The deterioration diagnosis method that attached driver pin to the force gauge is effective as a substitute of Pilodyn. We found that driver pin attached to the force gauge assumed it a plus driver, and the load assumed it 150N.
