In this study, we determined the effects of 8-week voluntary running exercise on mitogenicity response, production of interleukin-2 (IL-2) and interferon-γ (IFN-γ) of spleen cells in aged mice. Male BALB/c mice (16-month-old) were divided into two groups : a group given voluntary running exercise (exercise group) and a non-exercise group (control group). The applied exercise consisted of spontaneous running in wheels for 3 days per week over 8 weeks. In the exercise group, stimulation indices by concanavalin A (Con A) and phytohemagglutinin (PHA) were significantly higher than they were in the control group. When compared with the control group, the exercise group showed a significant increase in the splenic lymphocyte production of IL-2 stimulated by Con A. The production of IFN-γ stimulated by Con A of the two groups showed no significant differences. These results suggest that 8-week voluntary running exercise effectively enhanced cellular immune functions in aged mice, and that it contributes to the prevention of the immunosenescence.

At a clinic in the company, we observed most prevalence of consultation per employee was 30-39 years-old, and that of 60-69 years-old had increased most by the per capita number of times of consultation. According to International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD10), we observed outpatients of a circulatory organ system disease (36.7%), a pulmonary disease (20.8%), a urinary tract and sexual-organs system disease (9.6%), an alimentary system disease (9%), and endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases (7.5%). As compared with the number of outpatients in a clinic and a hospital by National Survey, we observed fewer orthopedic disease outpatients (3.9%), and this might be the characteristic common to the clinic in a company. According to the medical facilities survey, the ratio of clinics, established by companies decreased about 7% with 2806 in 2999 among 1995 and 2001. According to the worker health situation survey, the number of a place of business, which carried out the medical checkup authorized by law in their consultation room, also decreased from 1997 to 2002. This decrease might reflect a reduction of number of company clinics or the fall of capability of them.

This survey aims at examining the maintenance of influence of Hoken-Suisinin Activities of F-city (hereafter, Activities), which are activities of Community Organization in a local city, on its participants. To analyze the survey, we compared continuators' health behavior scores and their scores of health promoting activity towards their families and communities with those of retirees. Continuators and retirees were those who took part in Activities simultaneously for the first time. Results showed no significant differences among activity scores. Furthermore, average scores of continuators and retirees showed no marked differences. Therefore, it is assumed that the influence of Activities was maintained even after retiring from Activities.

We made a prospective cohort study of 2 ten thousands male and female elderly to elucidate the correlation between weight changes and change of prevalence rates of hypertension for 1 year. The results were as follows. In males weight loss of more than 2kg and more than 3kg for 1 year made prevalence rates of hypertension significantly reduced. But weight gain of more than 1kg, more than 2kg and more than 3kg for 1 year made prevalence rates significantly increased. The larger weight gain is, the higher prevalence rates becomes. Stable weight did not change prevalence rates. In males maintaining a stable body weight or avoiding weight gain prevent hypertension. And a little weight loss for 1 year made prevalence rates reduced. Weight loss, weight gain and stable weight did not irrespectively make prevalence rates significantly changed in females.
