This study investigated the effect of LeapFrog Tag Reading System, where each picture plays music and sound effects that vary each time children click, in English classes at an elementary school in Tokyo. The results of t−tests for the scores of closed questionnaires regarding reading before and after the program revealed that there were not significant differences between them. Thus, it can be said that the students’ attitudes toward English reading did not change significantly during the program. However, results of t−tests for the scores of vocabulary tests before and after the program revealed that there were significant differences between them in six out of ten items. The scores of post−vocabulary test were significantly higher than those of pre−vocabulary test. Thus, the activities using Tag Reading System seemed to be effective for increasing their vocabulary. Also, the chi−square test revealed that most of the participating students enjoyed learning English using Tag Reading System.

The main purpose of the study is to analyze how successfully children of fifth grade in elementary school, who have just been exposed to English, notice form−meaning connections(FMCs)on verb phrases(VO−Combination). The computer animation teaching material,“Teacher Carrot's Verbs 20”, has been developed as a tool for observing children's FMCs and towards an introduction of verbs, with which children try to guess the meaning. The results obtained suggest that the children reasonably retained the verb phrases in FMCs. However, considerable differences on FMCs could be observed among individual children. This paper reports the result of the study and also discusses the future possibility on animation teaching materials by using ICT in Elementary School English activities.

In 2011, English Activities become compulsory in elementary schools. Therefore, many elementary and junior high schools are trying to corporate to develop the collaborative teachers’ network to improve the curriculum coherence. In precedent researches, however, the physical constraints within the busy school schedules are pointed out. This lack of opportunities to share is a main cause preventing teachers from gaining mutual understanding and commitment, which are necessary for successful collaboration. As a person in charge of the grant project of Taisho−Higashi junior high school district area in Osaka, I considered the effective utilization of the ICT would solve these problems. Based on the Social Capital Theory to develop teachers’ network, I utilized the ICT on the stages step by step to further its maturity. After one and a half year's practice, the effective use of the ICT was found to play a key role to develop the network. The ICT improved mutual understanding between teachers, promoted the awareness of the members, and furthermore, contributed socially by sharing the products of the project.

We have developed a text mining tool named“Hipparu−McS”. The purpose of its development is to solve the problem that existing tools insufficiently assist users to realize self−exploration and flexible structuring, still they are essential concepts for users in the process of the use of text mining. Through the implementation and the trial experiment, this thesis clarifies the uniqueness of“Hipparu−McS” that the tool is capable of providing its users the variety of implications(metacognition)and the diversity of potential interpretation so that it actualizes the self−exploration and flexible structuring.

Coinciding with a near-disappearance of“north-south problem”of freshmen's grounding in ICT, we revised our class of“Basic Information Processing”for Medicine and Health Science students. We aimed at improving the“Specific Behavioral Objectives(SBOs)”of the course. In order to evaluate the new methodology in a statistical perspective, 1)a comprehensive survey on knowledge and skills in ICT, and 2)an investigation into the effectiveness of our class as seen from achievement quotients of SBOs, were carried out. Thereupon, two findings and a new issue were identified:1)the characteristics of a freshman population can be discussed by choosing two axes of measure, e. g., skills in tools like word−processor, spreadsheet and presentation, 2)every levels of skills and knowledge related to SBOs upon completion of the course exceeded those of before taking the class, and 3)some important topical targets like the concepts of“character-code”or“tracing”of a received mail are poorly understood by many learners, and should be overcome.
