This article deals with the effect of the vegetation upon the pedogenesis at the higher altitude of the South Japanese Alps. 1) Podzolic soil : Weakly developed podzolic soil is found under the coniferous forest of the sub-alpine zone. In the profile of this soil, for example, in the one which occur at Dentsuku-toge, there is thin bleached horizon, but no visible illuvial horizon has yet been formed. 2) Podzol: Well developed Podzol is found under the forest of Pinus pumila REGEL of the alpine belt. In this higher mountain area, the dryness of the land surface seems to favour to the genesis of this soil. It is assumed that the dryness may prevent leaf litters from aerobic decomposition and consequently may serve to accumulate much quantity of the raw humus.
