In order to trace the path of young Dokuchaev, who turned himself from a student of quaternary geology to the world first pedologist, his early papers mainly on the study of chernozem were carefully studied. It was clarified that most of his important concepts related to soil formation were almost completed in the first 3 years, from 1877 through 1879. These concepts include ‘soil horizon and A-B-C notation’, and ‘five factors of soil formation’, both of which were created from his lucid observations on the soil and its environment in the field. Dokuchaev’s notion on soil as ‘a natural body’ first appeared in his paper of a critical review on the existing soil classifications and a proposal of his own first natural classification of soils in 1879. Most probably, he should have learnt the wording of ‘natural body’ from Fallou, which he encountered during the preparation of his paper. Year 1879 was really an important turning point for Dokuchaev.
