We reported the survey results of Kuroboku soils distributed at Kitanohara, Mt. Sanbe. Results of soil profile survey and soil analyses at Japanese pampas grass (Miscanthus sinensis) land and red pine (Pinus densiflora) forest exhibited that the pine forest had black to brownish soil layer of 0-50 cm, which was 10cm thicker than that in grassland. Degradation of black soil color was not observed by the vegetation succession from the grassland to the forest. TC accumulated to deeper soil layers in the grassland profile although the dark colored soil layer was less deep in the grassland. Exchangeable (exch.) K and Mg contents in the soil layers were higher in the soil layers where TC was high. Exch. Ca was relatively high in the grassland. These results indicated that quantity and quality of organic matter supplied to soils have changed as the vegetation had changed, which modified the above soil properties. In both sites, the surface soil layers showed "non-allophanic soil layer" property. In all the soil horizons, pH(NaF) exceeded 9.2. Coefficient of phosphorous absorption was higher than 1500mg P_2O_5 100g^<-1> in A1-A3 and AB horizons (0-40cm) of grassland and in A1-A3 (0-35cm) of pine forest. In both sites, the 0-20cm layers had the property of "non-Allophanic Kuroboku horizon" in the Unified Soil Classification System of Japan. However, the soil thickness did not reach 25cm, and then the both soils were classified into "Typic Allophanic Kuroboku Soil" in this classification system. While the 0-30cm layer of grassland and the 0-35cm layer of pine forest met the requirements of "non-Allophanic Kuroboku property", so that the soils were classified into "Typic non-Allophanic Kuroboku Soil" in the Comprehensive Soil Classification System of Japan First Approximation. This possibly attributed to loess deposition, organic matter accumulation, and leaching of active Al (Al_o) at the surface soil layers.
