This paper analyzes renovated multi-unit housing published in architecture magazines and other media, including apartment complexes, condominiums, and apartments, focusing on changes in room layout, area, water sections, plan types, and doors. Data were collected from 372 cases through plan analyses and interviews. Results show 78.2% of cases reduced bedrooms, with LDK areas increased by 10 m² on average. Additional spaces (e.g., walk-in closets) accounted for 79% of cases. Access to water sections, like baths and toilets, increased by 119 cases. Hall-type layouts increased, replacing cul-de-sac layouts, and met modern needs for family interaction.

Focusing on narratives of dwelling experience recorded through Dwelling Experience Interviews by architecture students, this paper formulates quantitative analysis methods for the narratives and evaluates their validity. The narratives were quantified by defining the minimum unit of dwelling experience. By examining the number of these units in each narrative, general trends in the narratives were identified. Comparative and typological analyses were also conducted to explore which aspects of living environment residents frequently referred to, yielding insights useful for the planning of living environments. As these analyses were appropriately conducted and produced valuable findings, the methods were concluded to be valid.

This study explores the origins of the concrete block (CB) industry in postwar Japan, using Gunma Prefecture as a case where CB production became prominent. Focusing on the Gunma Prefectural Fireproof Apartment—the region’s first CB public housing project—the research analyzes its construction process and design. It finds that the adoption of the “Jukyo-shiki” system, developed by architect Gonkuro Kume, played a crucial role. This adoption acted as a catalyst for the local CB manufacturing industry, linking early public housing initiatives with regional industrial development.

Regarding the earliest housing units built by Japan Housing Corporation, it is widely believed that “Since JHC could be built 3.3 ㎡ larger than public housing, that additional space was allocated to create a dining kitchen and a bathroom which were not common features in houses at the time.”

This paper aims to verify the widely accepted notion about the earliest 2DK-type housing unit built by JHC by means of calculating and comparing their actual floor areas with those of public housing from the same period, and to propose revisions to the conventional understanding.

This study focuses on the living arrangement of ‘Attending’ which goes beyond the binary choice of ‘resettling at evacuation area’ or ‘returning to the previous area’ in municipalities affected by the nuclear disaster, as well as the spatial resources that support it. It is suggested that the spatial resources supporting ‘Attending’ are imprtant to promote commuting to Tomioka Town, and will contribute to maintaining a loose relationship between the town’s operation and its residents, while passing it on to the next generation.

This study analyzes the impact of spatial configuration in special nursing homes on caregivers’ burden and residents’ quality of life (QOL). Data were collected from 46 facilities in Tokyo and Tochigi before COVID-19, classifying configurations by the proportion of rooms facing common areas and the number of common spaces. Results indicate that the hall-type, integrated layout—often presented as a standard model for unit care—yields lower QOL ratings. In contrast, corridor-type and mixed-type layouts with a higher proportion of corridor-facing rooms, as well as segmented common spaces, prove advantageous.

To design attractive large scale atrium spaces, it is crucial to understand peopole’s behavioral characteristics, particularly how individuals choose and use places to stay. Although large body of studies have examined factors influencing the selection of staying locations, few have explored the role of the visual environment. This research investigates the impact of visual elements on seat selection behavior. Specifically, we develop a nested logit model of seat selection based on gaze data collected through a seating selection experiment conducted in virtual reality (VR) environments.

This paper aims to support facility planning by estimating the dwell time distributions in large-scale shopping malls. A statistical model is first developed to estimate dwell time distributions based on arrival time and zone, using directional pedestrian traffic volumes—measured at five-minute intervals via AI cameras and additional devices. The model is then applied to two large-scale shopping malls (Mall A and Mall B) to estimate zone- and time-specific dwell time distributions for each facility. Additionally, Mall A is further subdivided into smaller zones to explore the relationship between dwell time patterns and spatial characteristics.

Recently, there has been an increasing number of offices incorporating plants in their interior spaces as a biophilic design approach. This study aims to clarify the characteristics of placemaking by examining the coexistence of plants and people at the entrance spaces of lower floors of large-scale office buildings in central Tokyo. From 44 building cases, 443 Plant Units and 71 Green Areas were extracted, and classified into eight Green Area Patterns based on the amount of greenery, seating arrangements, and their connection with outdoor environments. The result finds Indoor Green and Placemaking typologies and their tendentious aspects.

Following the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake, the severe damage in Ishikawa Prefecture led to the promotion of cross-boundary and wide-area evacuation. In destinations like Kanazawa City, various shelter types emerged, including “secondary shelters” using hotels, “1.5th (mid-term) shelters” combining matching and long-term stays for vulnerable individuals, “wide-area shelters” for group evacuations, and “designated welfare shelters” in welfare facilities. Additionally, voluntary evacuations, such as staying with relatives, were observed. As evacuation options diversify and systems become more complex, it is crucial to monitor future trends and continue considering response strategies.

In Japan, the recent surge in vacant detached houses has emerged as a significant social concern. Simultaneously, a decline in skilled construction labor has raised challenges in maintaining, renovating, or removing such properties. This study introduces a novel “linkage method” that integrates microdata from the Housing and Land Survey with small-area GIS data from the Population Census to estimate the spatial distribution of unused detached houses. The paper outlines (1) the methodology and implementation considerations, (2) estimations by urban planning zones at national and prefectural levels, and (3) validation through comparison with municipal survey data.

This book almost corresponds to Tohaku bon “Daiku no syo” of ge. This book is similar to Kokkai bon “Daiku no syo” and Kokkai bon “Daikukata no syo” and it can be considered that this book was completed by the early 19th century. It can be considered that the original book of this book had an itemized structure.

The introduction process of Taiwan Hinoki into Shinto shrine architecture in prewar mainland Japan can be traced by analyzing the Shrine Carpentry Office’s advertisements published in the Shinto Association Journal. We consulted the memoirs of the Office’s founder Ashizu Kōjirō and found the key figures involved the introduction as well as the ideas behind. We highlighted two key innovations, (1) the introduction of the water seasoning drying technique, and (2) the establishment of a rationing system, in both the Office played an important role.

The aim of this paper is to discuss the ambiguity of Prouvé’s concept of ‘decoration’ through discourse related to his negation of ‘decoration.’ His references to ‘decoration’ were limited to issues related to ‘structure’ and ‘skin’. In particular, he criticized the decorativeness of the ‘skin’. This is because, for him, hiding the ‘structure’ with a ‘skin’ was nothing more than ‘camouflage’. Eventually, Prouvé began to aim for spaces where the interrelationship between structure and skin is clear. It is at this point that ‘decoration’ itself is permitted.

The buildings in Koishikawa Korakuen Garden functioned as both a “view” and a “use,” and Tokujin-do was built to combine both qualities. The name and statues enshrined there have changed, and this paper examines the social factors that have led to these changes. Historical buildings can provide a more accurate evaluation of architectural phenomena due to their social context. By accumulating such verification, it will be possible to clarify the political and ideological aspects that influenced the history of a building, as well as the technical theories, leading to a reevaluation of the significance and diversity of buildings throughout history.

This study aims to clarify the uniqueness of housing in Tsubata’s folk houses. By analyzing the newly developed theory of buildings based on daily life, known as “IE-ethics,” which focuses on function rather than structural composition, we seek to identify the characteristics of Tsubata’s housing. These characteristics will be compared with surrounding regions to establish their uniqueness. Ultimately, we arrived at the hypothesis that the distinctiveness of Tsubata’s housing lies in the maintenance of an undifferentiated function of “OI,” which corresponds to today’s living-dining space. This way of living preserves an older, prototypical form of habitation.
