It has been reported in animal experiments that a fermented barley extract has an anti-allergy effect. In the present study, the preventive effect of a drink developed with fermented barley extract and red perilla extract as main components (FBR: fermented barley extract-red perilla drink) was evaluated in human subjects with records of seasonal allergic rhinitis. Twenty-five subjects with seasonal allergic rhinitis were randomly assigned to the two groups. One group started daily intake of FBR for 14 weeks before the onset of cedar pollen scattering (Agroup) and the other group started daily intake of FBR for 5 weeks after the onset of cedar pollen scattering (B-group). The subjects were asked to record their symptoms and QOL parameters daily for 14 weeks. Results showed the scores for nasal symptoms of the A-group were lower than those of the B-group during the pollen season. In addition, the nasal symptoms of the A-group were significantly reduced during the hinoki pollen season. These results suggest that FBR is useful for the prevention of seasonal allergic rhinitis.
