The illumination level in an interior lighting installation is not constant but gradually drops from its initial highest value, in the lapse of time, due to the influence of several factors. The authors picked up and studied theoretically, among others, four factors as following: lamp depreciation, dust accumulation on the luminaires, dust and dirt deposition on the room surfaces and lamp failure. For studying the former two factors, exponential relations with respect to time were assumed, while a linear relation was also taken for a simpler approximation.
Some economic problems were solved: comparison between individual and group replacement of lamps, decision on the lamps replacement period, decision on the luminaires cleaning period, etc. Graphical methods and simple practical formulas were presented.
Conclusions from the studies on the second and third factors as above agree with those formerly given by P. Moon and D. E. Spencer and by R. N. Edwards jr.
