ln this study, a measurement method for thermal effusivity of metals by contacting a TC(thermocouple) probe to the surface of a sample has been developed. Temperature response of the TC probe on coming into contact with the sample, which is in a strip shape and maintained at a uniform temperature in vacuum by passing an electric current, is detected. The ratio of thermal diffusivity of the sample to that of the TC probe is obtained by applying a curve fitting method to the theoretical results of the temperature response on the basis of a one-dimensional approximation assuming that both the TC probe and the sample are semi-infinite solids. The thermal effusivity of the sample is obtained from the thermal effusivity of the TC probe which is determined through separate measurements on standard materials. Uncertaintie in measured thermal effusivities due to departures from the ideal measurement conditions were estimated. The experimental results show that the present method for thermal effusivity can be applied to metals if required conditions for the TC probe are arranged properly.
