According to the New Testament, the Annunciation is the announcement by the angel Gabriel that Mary would conceive a child to be born Christ, the Son of God. However there are a variety of pictures of the Annunciation, because there was no specific details written in text and many interpretations of the scene were created by artists. In this study, we collected photographic documentation of 213 paintings from the Middle Ages to modern times. We grouped the works in relation to era and region, and considered the characteristics of pictorial space by descriptive geometry. The results showed that expression changed depending on the era, however from the Renaissance onward, Italian paintings were influenced by the theory of L. B. Alberti. Also, when the vanishing point of the picture plane of 154 works painted using one point perspective were compared according to region, in Italian paintings the vanishing point was of a similar height to that of Mary, but in Northern European paintings, the point of view was high in order for the whole scene to be visible.
