    We conducted research to find whether the blood flow in the gingiva of children affected the condition of the gingiva. The results were as follows;
    1. The blood flow between maxilary primary central incisors increased more than between primary central incisors and lateral incisors.
    2. The blood flow of male children increased more than that of female children.
    3. The blood flow decreased with dental prophylaxis of the gingiva.
    4. The blood flow decreased more when it bled during dental prophylaxis.
    The measurement of the blood flow in the gingiva seems to be useful for the clinical study of children in order to grasp the health status of the gingiva and judge the improvement of the gingivitis. Key words: Children, Gingiva, Blood Flow, Laser Doppler Flowmeter, Dental Prophylaxis

    To predict the changes in the shape of the mandibular while it continues to develop is quite valuable for clinics of pediatric dentistry. The genes determined mandibular shape, but it is not clear how this is in humans.
    Mice having a higher homology than humans are a useful model for genetic research, and especially inbred mice with almost 100% homology at every allele are suitable to genetic crossing.
    When research the genes to establish mandibular shape, we had to obtain one's size in each inbred mouse mandible as the phenotype.
    It was also necessary to find out the micro-satellite markers with polymorphism between two strains of mice for linkage analysis which is useful in detecting the position of the gene on their chromosomes.

    We have recently reported that the EL(epilepsy-like disorder) mouse is one of the most useful models for studying the development of the tooth germ. The oral manifestation of the EL strain is characterized by the high frequency of a missing third molar and non-significant localization (bot h lower and upper jaws being equally affected). The purpose of this study was to determine whether the absence of the third molars in EL mice is controlled by genetic factor(s). As an initial approach to investigate the cause of the missing teeth(MT), we performed classical genetic crosses using three inbred strains of mice, EL/sea, C 3 H/HeJ and MSM/Msf.

    This study was performed to determine the effectiveness of two caries activity tests, these being the Site strip method (SS) and the Strip mutans method (SM), for screening adults with a high risk of dental caries, and also to evaluate the prevalence level of mutans streptococci in three statuses of different tooth surfaces involving restored, decayed, or sound tooth surfaces, using SS. Caries examination on a tooth-surface basis, collection of paraffin-stimulated saliva for SM, and plaque sampling from four specific approximal tooth surfaces of each individual for SS were performed in 125 adults, ranging in age from 21 to 25 (average age of 22 years 8 months). After that two kinds of samples were incubated for 48 hours at 37°C, in the standard MSB broth, and the prevalence level was evaluated, being given a score between 0 and 3.

    Cases of dental caries have tended to become less and less serious throughout Japan. The same istrue of Niigata Prefecture. Since 1973, our department has conducted surveys of elementary and juniorhigh school children in a rural community of the prefecture to grasp the state of health in theiroral environment The annual surveys have also found the same tendency.
    Our research in the same village focused on children who were born between from 1983 and 1986to study the incidence of dental caries. Based on the results obtained up to 1998, we examined thecaries incident in the permanent dentition according to the types of teeth, and at the same time analyzedthe correlation between the scores on the Cariostat test at the time of permanent tooth eruptionand the caries incident in the permanent dentition.

    The status of inhibition of plaque adhesion 24 hours after polishing was investigated in volunteers in order to determine how smoothened surfaces of teeth after surface polishing with Polishing Paste No.1® and Polishing Paste No.3® differed from the non-polished rough surfaces of teeth. The results obtained are as follows:
    1) Plaque scores after treatment significantly differed between polished and non-polished surfaces, with a 0.01% differnce in significance.
    2) Plaque scores also significantly differed between post-treatment days 1 and 2.
    3) The data were not biased between of the subjects more and less skillful hands or between right and left sides.
    From these results, it was confirmed that plaque adhesion can be significantly inhibited by thorough polishing of teeth surfaces with Polishing Paste No.1/No.3, compared with non-polished surfaces, even in the oral cavity of the same subject.

    Fluoride profiles of enamel surfaces of eleven extracted lower central incisors obtained from Beijing Medical Univ. Hospital were examined in order to clarify the site differences of fluoride concentrations in the enamel. The labial and lingual sites were determined at 6 different depths (1,3,5,10,20,30μm), using the acid etched micro-sampling technique. Fluoride concentration was measured with a fluoride ion electrode.
    We then compared the fluoride concentrations in the enamel among the subjects residing in Beijing with those subjects residing in Sapporo (twenty-one lower central incisors) and made inquiries about the fluoride histories as well as about the drinking habits in order better to understand the relationship between environmental factors such as drinking water or oral hygiene habits as well as the condition of the existing tooth enamel.

    Odontoclasts are morphologically quite similar to osteoclasts but details on the difference of both cells is still not clear. There have also been no report on the cultivation of human odontoclasts. The purpose of this study was to cultivate the cells obtained from the resorbed root surfaces of the human deciduous teeth with the serum obtained from low calcium-diet rabbits, One hundred and fifty-two human deciduous teeth in physiologic root resorption were used in this study. The cells were cultivated on bone slices with serum obtained from normal-diet rabbits, serum obtained from low calciumdiet rabbits, or serum obtained from low calcium-diet rabbits containing 10-8mol salmon calcitonin. After the cultivation, tartrate-resistant asid phosphatase (TRAP) activity was detected using a light microscope. The resorption lacunae on bone slices were examined with a scanning electron microscope.

    This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between salivary flow rate test and salivary buffer test with caries status in 344 junior high school students.
    The following results were obtained;
    1. The caries prevalence, mean DF-tooth of the subjects was 91.0%,5.02, respectively.
    2. The salivary flow rate test did not correlate to the caries status.
    3. The salivary buffer test showed highly significant correlation with DF-tooth (p<0.001).
    4. When the salivary buffer test was divided into three groups (low risk/middle risk/high risk), the mean DF-tooth group showed a significant difference among the three groups (ANOVA p<0.001). Furthermore, the distribution of caries prevalence and mean DF-tooth for the second-molar showed a significant difference among the these groups (Chi-square test, ANOVA p<0.001). From these results, it was suggested that the salivary buffer test was useful for clinical application. Key words: Salivary buffer test, Caries activity test, Dental caries

The materials were 6 beagle dogs (5-6 month old) whose maxillary left and right second incisors were extracted, replanted and physiologically (semi-rigid) splinted. Root canal treatment (pulp extirpation and calcium hydroxide filling) was performed only on the right side incisor one weekp ost-replantationO. n the same day, the splints were removed on both the left and right. The animals were given subcutaneous injections of calcein on the day of the replantation and achromycin one week and 3,5,7 weeks post-replantationD. uring a period of 15 weeks to 25 weeks postreplantation, the animals were sacrificed by perfusion under deep anesthesia 24 hours after the final labeling (calcein). The upper jaws, including incisors, were dissected and then processed into resinembedded ground sections (100μm thick). The replanted incisors and periodontal tissues of all of the sections were examined using microradiograms, fluorescent microscopy and polarizing microscopy.

    Regional odontodysplasia is a relatively rare condition of undertermined etiology, involving a small group of adjacent teeth in both deciduous and permanent dentitions and characterized by the defective formation of both enamel and dentin. A boy aged 3 years,1 month was diagnosed as having regional odontodysplasia with a lesion of the maxillary left molars. The affected primary second molar showed severe hypoplasia, and had a periapical abscess. The distal alveolar bone was noticeably absorpted vertically. The maxillary left primary second molar was extracted after the diagnosis. Histopathological findings showed wide interglobular dentin and pulp stone or denticles. The maxillary left first molar revealed a symptom of severe perception hypersensitiveness immediately after eruption. The affected first molar was extracted because the root was malformed. The beginning of calcification of the maxillary left second premolar was seen at age of 6 years,9 months. The tooth crown of the second premolar was malformed, while the tooth root formation seemed to be sufficient. The affected second premolar erupted at the age of 14. The maxillary left second molar erupted on the medial and paratal side, and showed a cross-bite with the lower first molar as the opposing tooth. Orthodontic treatment was performed. The affected second premolar was restored with a chrome-steel crown as temporising restoration. The distal alveolar bone of the second premolar still showed diffused radiolucency on the X-ray. The root of the second premolar formed regularly.

    It has been reported that dentinogenesis imperfecta is a disease of the dentin formation based on an inherited disorder, generally, followed by osteogenesis imperfecta.
    We had an opportunity for dental clinical examination of two siblings, an elder sister and a younger brother, who had deciduous teeth with dentinogenesis imperfecta, Although we felt that the two siblings might not show three characteristic disorders in osteogenesis imperfecta. In this study, we reported the results by clinical and X-ray examinations and also by histological and physicochemical investigations on their exfoliated teeth.
    Clinically, all of the erupted deciduous teeth of the two siblings gray-bluish in color, showed a remarkable attrition and had partially chipped enamel. X-ray photography revealed that the dental pulp cavities of all the deciduous teeth in the two siblings had been constricted. Moreover, X-ray lucent areas were seen in the roots of all the four teeth of the first deciduous molars and the lower-right second deciduous molar in the younger brother.
    Histologically, the exfoliated deciduous teeth of the two siblings showed a flat structure at the dentin-enamel junction. In some of the teeth, the mantal dentin attached with the enamel showed hypocalcification. Tomes' granular layer-like structures associated with short dentinal tubules were observed in the dentin. The dentinal tubules in most areas of the circumpulpal dentin were, however, extremely loose in density and the dental pulp cavities were remarkably constricted as reported previously. Statistically, the dentin showed a lower calcification than the normal dentin with energydispersive X-ray microanalysis. In addition, the dentin of younger brother showed a significantly softer than normal dentin under the Vickers' microhardness test. We thus consider that these basic findings suppout the clinical and X-ray photographic observations.
