    An exact method using power series expansions is presented for solving axisymmetric free vibration problems for shells of revolution having meridionally varying curvature and thickness. The governing equations of motion and the boundary conditions are derived from the stationary conditions of the Lagrangian of the shells of revolution. The method is demonstrated for shells of revolution having elliptical, cycloidal, parabolical, catenary and hyperbolical meridional curvature. The natural frequencies and the mode shapes are numerically calculated for these shells having second degree thickness variation.

    An exact method using power series expansions is presented for solving for solving in-plane free vibration problems of inhomogeneous curved bars having varying curvatures and cross-sections. Equations of motion and boundary conditions are derived from the stationary conditions of the Lagrangian of curved bars. Natural frequencies and mode shapes are presented for elliptical and circular arc bars having both ends clamped and calmped-free ends.

    The effect of pivot clearance on the dynamic characteristics of a rotary actuator for head positioning in magnetic disk storage is numerically investigated. A motion equation which takes pivot clearance and pivot bearing elasticity into account is derived for a track-following servo controlled actuator. Elastic deformation of a bearing as well as head positioning error increase in a sudden step when the bearing makes alternating impacts at the antipodes of the pivot shaft. Based of the result, design criteria are obtained for the maximum acceptable clearance for high accuracy in head positioning.

    The particular eigen modes of the body and the suspension of a vehicle have a great influence on vehicle compartment noise and idling vibrations etc. Therefore, it is desirable to develop the optimum method for effective control of these eigen modes and improvement of these phenomena. The most effective analysis method to accomplish it is, in the broad sense, the mode sensitive analysis. A new method for mode sensitive analysis is proposed in this paper. By using some eigen vectors of the current structure as the initial value, we calculated some eigenpairs of the changed structure with this method, that is, the modified simultaneous iteration method. The inverse matrix of the current structure shortens the calcuration time greatly, when applying this modified simultaneous iteration method. By using a 5-degrees of freedom vibration model and an FEM beam model, we compared it with the four existing methods and confirmed its effectiveness. We also discovered some new characters of these existing methods.

    The present paper deals with both the eigenvalue problems and the frequency response problems of rectangular plates with narrow slits, and investigates the effects of slit geometry. Analytically and experimentaly vibration problems are solved for plates with an internal straight slit, plates with a slit emanating from one edge, and plates with an internal cross slit. The analytical technique of the Finite Element Method, which can be applied to complex boundary conditions and arbitrarily located slits, has been used to evaluate the dynamic characteristics of slit plates. The experimental technique of time-average holographic interferometry has been used to record their transverse vibration mode. The location and length of the slits have been varied, while the width has been kept constant. The analytical results obtained are favorably compared with experimental data, and it can be realized that the analytical technique of F.E.M. used adequately predicts the dynamic behavior of plates with arbitrarily located slits.

    Equations of motion of a gear train system which is composed of a flexible shaft, a pair of gears, and a link are derived in consideration of the torsion of the shaft, gear tooth stiffness, backlash, and characteristics of driving source. Using the bang-bang method to attenuate residual vibration of the system, the dynamic characteristics of the system are analyzed theoretically and investigated experimentally.

    This paper presents a method for controlling the vibrations of a robot arm with multiple joints subjected to a vibration force at the tip of the arm. The method proposed here is the velocity and position feedback system having a damping effect on the robot arm during the excition. The paper derives the exact theoretical results by combining the electrical differential equations and the equation of motion of the arm with consideration of flexural vibrations. To verify the theoretical results, experimental tests were carried out for the robot arm with two joints. Both the theoretical and experimental results were in good agreement. The vibration characteristics of the general robot arm with three joints have been discussed in detail.

    The engine-clutch-manual transmission system of an automobile is modelled by a forced torsional vibration system of two degrees of freedom including two nonlinear terms, namely clearance and friction. In the derivation of the analytical solution, the friction term is linearized based upon the approximated solution of motion. The conclusions are as follows : 1) Experiments, computer simulations and the analytical solution show that the stick-slip motion occurs when the friction torque takes a value within certain limits. 2) When the system approaches resonance, the sum of torque impulse becomes large in the system with small friction, but it remains almost unchanged in the system with large friction. 3) It seems that the effects of system parameters on the magnitude of shock can be estimated by the amplitude magnification factor of an approximated single degree of freedom system.

    The frequency characteristics of the workpiece at cutting on the lathe were investigated using the impulse technique. The natural frequencies and damping ratios of the workpiece at cutting were greater than those at no cutting. The damping ratios decreased with an increase in the cutting speed. The estimated natural frequencies, which were calculated from data of the static cutting experiments, were smaller than those of the dynamic experiments, and the estimated damping ratios larger than those of the dynamic experiments. The reason for decrement in the frequencies and increment in the damping ratios was considerd to be the difference of the shear angle between the static and dynamic conditions. The dynamic shear angle was smaller than the static one. The cutting process was expressed in the first order system which became the lead or lag factor.

    A numerical approach is proposed for estimating the mode shape and natural frequency of an orthotropic plate. By applying an iterative method similar to Stodola's method to the governing equation not of a free vibration but of a forced one, a series solution is derived. By using this solution as a trial function, the application of Galerkin's technique to the governing equation of a free vibration yields approximate equations for estimating the natural frequency and the mode shape. It is a merit of this approach that one can estimate directly the arbitrary order natural frequency and mode shape. For the discussion of the convergency and accuracy of the solution, a simply supported orthotropic rectangular plate with an intermediate support is demonstrated. From these results, it follows that one can estimate values with sufficient accuracy. As numerical examples, natural frequencies are computed for various flexural rigidities and aspect ratios.

    In this paper, we analysed theoretically the hunting stability of a high speed vehicle having a small clearance in the connecting position between the truck frame and the bolster anchor when the spring and friction are connected in series against truck turning. According to the theoretical analysis, it was found that the stability of hunting depends on the angular amplitude of the truck. And the limit cycle corresponding with the hunting velocity is a stable limit cycle when the amplitude is small, while the limit cycle is an unstable one when the amplitude is large. Then, the fact that the body hunting ceases to exist in the range between both amplitudes is made clear. Further, the analysis revealed that the stability of hunting is affected by various factors : the stiffness of the bolster anchor, the friction force acting on the side bearer, the clearance in the connecting position between the truck frame and bolster anchor, the damping coefficient of truck turning and the damping coefficient of body suspension and so on.

    Recently, the non-contact measuring method of sensing has been adopted in many fields, for it can purify data eliminating the noise which is caused on insertion. It is important to use this measuring method in order to make a film thickness uniform, when we start to exchange or to produce various types of thermo-plastic film in the tubular film blowing process. The process stability depends greatly on the control of film thickness, particularly in the case where we must produce many kinds of products. However we can not use non-contact thickness sensors in the market on this tubular blowing process .From this viewpoint, we developed a new sensing system whose principle is different from usual thickness sensors (for instance, optical sensors). This new system not only compensates for the weakpoints of these usual sensors, but also can predict thickness profiles quickly in the early stage of production, to get a good yeild.

    An automatic control method for a suspended gondola-rope system is presented in this paper, employing a position sensor device (PSD) instead of ITV cameras to recognize the relative position relationship between gondola and luminous targets. First, the dynamics of this SMM (Suspended Maneuvering Module) are derived with eight orders of freedom under some assumptions in the three dimensional space. Then employing a PSD which is mounted inside the gondola with a rotational freedom, two dimensional position data can be obtained so as to orient the gondola toward the luminating target automatically and search the targets under vibrational environments due to disturbances for tracking. Some useful techniques using this system are demonstrated for estimating relative positions betwwen the module and the target in static and even during vibration, employing rate gyroscopes in order to increase the vibration control performance .The control methods for swing and torsional vibrations are proposed both by controlling air jets in the on-off PWM manner.

    The objective of this study is to develope a personal CAD system which is usable for calculating the time response characteristics of arbitral hydraulic control systems. In the previous paper, a program system by which any control system can be straightforwardly simulated from its block-diagram representation by using superior graphic functions installed in personal computers was reported. An important limitation of previous system, however, was that the system was not applicable to control systems with a distributed parameter. Fluid lines are one such system. In the present study, therfore, a method of simulating the fluid line systems is intended to be developed. Techniques based on four terminal networks are applied. The simulated time responses are compared with the measured responses of representative fluid line systems to show the validity of the method.

    A new method of displacement analysis of complex six-link mechanisms of the Stephenson-type, which are composed of only revolute pairs or one prismatic and six revolute pairs, is developed for the purpose of automatic calculations of kinematic properties. First, the displacements of links of the mechanisms of twenty three kinds are calculated by the formulas for the displacement analysis of five-link structures of two kinds. Then, the equation of the sixth degree is solved by the Strum theorem and the Ferrari method. Second, the composition loops and the domains of motion of the driving link are discriminated by the domains on four number-lines which are separated on the basis of the limit positions of motion of the driving link and the special positions of component four-and two-link chains. This discrimination algorithm can also be used as the Grashof condition of complex six-link mechanisms.

    Dwell function generators are applicable broadly to several kinds of automatic machines, because they need not have any special control equipment for positioning and therefore have high responsibilities. In the present paper, Stephenson type 6-link crank-and-rocker mechanisms are studied. Conditions for output arms to dwell at the edge points of rocking are analyzed, and relationships between the dwell periods and mechanism parameters are clarified numerically by simulations. Such relationships are approximated by polinomials in the order of less than five, and giving the dwell periods as design data, an automatic optimum synthesis of 6-link dwell mechanisms is carried out.

    This paper describes an optimum design of hydrodynamic journal bearings under laminar and turbulent operating conditions. Simplified mathematical expressions are presented for the eccentricity ratio, friction force and whirl onset speed as a function of the Sommerfeld number or eccentricity ratio. The radial clearance, slenderness ratio and viscosity of lubricants which optimize both the oil flow rate and the oil film temperature rise in hydrodynamic journal bearings under the constant load are determined numerically for a wide range of journal speeds.

    As a basis for making clear the treatment of the dynamic load in the calculation of the scoring load capacity of a spur gear pair, the influence of the contact width in a heavy load intensity sector on the anti-seizure capacity of a gear base oil was examined by two-cylinder tests in which the load intensity was fluctuated during rotation from the viewpoints of load and temperature. Experiments were carried out at a high specific sliding. The contact width little affects the anti-seizure capacity as the sliding velocity is increased. The anti-seizure capacity under the fluctuating load intensity is not less than that under the constant load intensity. Particularly, the difference between both capacities increases as the sliding velocity is increased when the frictional surfaces are finished finely and the contact width is small. Independent of whether the load intensity is fluctuated or not, the seizure occurrence in the mixed lubrication state has an intimate relation with the outer surface bulk temperature rather than with the maximum contact surface temperature.

    Friction tests are carried out by using a four-ball machine, a compression-twist type friction testing machine, a strip-ironing type friction testing machine and a cup deep drawing apparatus, which are representative of fundamental friction tests, fundamental friction tests for metal forming, simulative friction tests and tests in practical uses respectively. The lubricants used are several mineral oils, oiliness agents and extreme pressure additives. Correlations among the evaluation measures gained are studied. It has been clarified that the measures show a good correlation in cases where the testpieces have a similar surface appearances after friction sliding against each other.

    In estimate the judder characteristics of an automobile clutch from a test piece, a new estimating method has been proposed in which the influence of decrease in friction on judder is weighted differently in low and high slip velocity ranges. Furthermore, by using this estimating method, the relation between the judder characteristics and the compositions of the clutch facings was discussed. As a result, a decrease in friction in the range of the large slip velocity which produces a large judder was found to be produced by the lubricating action of thermally-decomposed materials and to be controlled by the types of binder, the void content and the metal addition ratio.

    Fretting damage morphology was investigated for SUS 304 stainless steel in a vacuum (4×10-3 Pa) by varying the number of fretting cycles, the normal load and slip amplitude, in which the generation of surface cracks was examined by SEM observation. The condition for the generation of cracks and the morphology of the cracks depended on both load and slip amplitude. Cracks initiated at the boundary between fretted and unfretted areas after a certain number of cycles. Long cracks were formed under lower loads and short cracks were formed under higher loads at a constant slip amplitude. The length of a crack increased with an increase in slip amplitude, followed by a stop of the crack generation at a certain slip amplitude at a constant load. The slip amplitude for the limitation of the crack generation was approximately proportional to the load.

    Operational fatigue tests of nitrided gears were performed using a power circulating gear testing machine, in order to elucidate the failure mode, load carrying capacity and relation between tooth profile change and dynamic performance in the fatigue process of a nitrided aluminium chromium molybdenum steel gear. The failure mode was a tooth breakage by bending fatigue at the tooth fillet under a higher applied load and tooth breakage due to spalling near the pitch point under a lower applied load. The surface durability of the nitrided gear was within the range of that of case-hardened gears. The changes of tooth root strain, noise and vibration during the fatigue process were slight, since the change of tooth profile deterioration was insignificant.

    The most conventional method of getting the correct tooth surface of an hourglass worm wheel is to cut the wheel by a hob cutter which has the same external shape as the worm. This method, however, is too troublesome for getting the current hob, especially in the case of small production. In such a case, it is more convenient to adopt the so-called fly tool method. The approximation of this method, however, is not so good. This paper proceses a new method whereby a curved edged cutter is controlled numerically so as to trace the theoretical tooth surface of the wheel in such a manner that several traces of the cutter can envelope a surface which is close enough to the theoretical one. From the trial cutting, the paper also extracted some accompanying problems and gave solutions to some of them.

    An actual unmanned manufacturing station consisting of an NC machine and an industrial robot is assumed. The main hazards of the robot to a human, which occur for the troubleshooting in the automatic operation mode of the system, are enumerated using the "Action-Chains-Model". The Fault Trees of the accidents caused by the hazards are given as the subsets of the "Logic Models for the Analysis of the Accident-Causation-Mechanisms", and the minimal cut structures are represented with Priority AND Gates in consideration of the specifications of the basic events. Furthermore, the hazard controllability of a manual, an automatic, and a combined mechanism to cut off the power sources of the robot when human enters the site are evaluated by comparing the expected numbers of occurrences of the respective top events.
