Diamond, with its wide bandgap and superior semiconductor properties, has attracted significant attention as a promising material for power semiconductors. However, its extreme hardness poses challenges for slicing it into wafers. The authors previously demonstrated successful laser slicing of single-crystal HPHT diamond using an ultrashort pulsed laser. In this study, the same method was applied to CVD diamond, comparing the morphology of modified regions and surface integrity with those of HPHT diamond. The results confirmed that precise slicing is also achievable for CVD diamond.

GaN, which is attracting attention as a power semiconductor, faces technical challenges and cost issues when using a freestanding substrate. Therefore, a laser lift-off method was investigated for 2µm-thick GaN films grown on silicon substrates. In this study, a pulsed laser that passes through GaN was focused near the interface between silicon and GaN, and the laser was scanned across the entire surface of 10mm square samples. As a result, it was confirmed that the absorbed laser created a void at the interface, enabling the detachment of the GaN film.

The positioning accuracy measurement standard for for 5-axis machining centers have not been revised as the other accuracy measurement. One of the reasons for this is the lack of innovative equipment, such as R-test, to measure the positioning accuracy of rotary axes. In this study, a newly announced device for measuring the positioning accuracy of rotary tables is evaluated and future improvements to the device are considered.

To improve the accuracy of touch-trigger probe measurement using a six-axis robot, we propose the application of the robot kinematic model, containing not only the DH errors, but also angular positioning deviations of all the rotary axes, to compensate for the influence of the robot's positioning error. Straightness, squareness, and parallelism measurements are performed to evaluate the accuracy of the robotic probing. The predicted profiles obtained by the present robot kinematic model are compared with the measured profiles. Furthermore, the measurement accuracy is evaluated based on the measurement uncertainty evaluation method for coordinate measuring machines standardized by the ISO.

In CNC machining, a large direction change angle in the corner between blocks causes the CNC machine tool to decelerate. This study proposes a method for identifying the direction change angle (angle tolerance) that avoids deceleration. We also think that creating a program with this angle tolerance or lower for curved machining can enable high-speed machining without deceleration at corners. Experiments were conducted to verify that this identification method and the resulting programs allow for high-speed machining.

This paper describes the development of a prototype 5-axis machine tool with an idling stop function installed only on the X-axis of the translation axis, with the aim of reducing servo standby power consumption of small machine tools. However, by supplementing the X-axis with simultaneous control of the B-axis and Z-axis, the power consumption was successfully reduced while maintaining the degree of freedom of cutting.

STEP-NC, specified by ISO14649, was developed as a machining data model for CNC machine tools. However, STEP-NC has a problem in that it does not adequately represent the shape and operation for multi-axis machining. In this study, we propose a shape and operation representation for 4-axis machining, which is a type of multi-axis machining, and perform pocket machining on a cylindrical surface using the created STEP-NC data.

In this paper, we aimed to improve a flapping flight performance using a fluid force such as rotational circulation and proposed a quasi-active feathering mechanism that reproduced the actual motion of a hummingbird by using the dynamics of active flapping motion. This mechanism utilizes the moment of inertia by the mass attached to the wing root and achieves quick pitch rotation when switching between up and down strokes. Here, we investigated the motion characteristics theoretically and experimentally.

In this paper, aerodynamic characteristics was investigated using the rigid plate wing model based on a hummingbird. Here, the computational fluid dynamics computation was performed according to the wing motion trajectory consisting of the stroke plane and trapezoidal feathering motion instead of sinusoidal one. The hovering simulation results showed that these motions affected the vortex and pressure fields and improved the maximum and average lifts.

In the denim manufacturing process, shaving is often carried out by hand to add value. Most of the shaving operations are based on human intuition and tacit knowledge. In this paper, we examine how to improve this operation using a dual-armed humanoid robot. In particular, we will examine the formalization of tacit knowledge by attempting sound feedback focusing on changes in the shaving sound during denim processing.

We would like to understand cell behavior through the application and removal of physical loads to the cells. Previous research has used a method to estimate cell behavior from the suction and discharge of cells using a micropipette. However, this experimental system was highly dependent on the skill level of the operator. In this study, we formed tiny flow channels on the same scale as a pipette within a microfluidic device, and further integrated into the device a pump specialized for reciprocating motion that can drive the same operations as a pipette suction and discharge.

Conventional assisted artificial hearts can cause complications due to contact between the blood and the artificial material. Therefore, we aim to develop an artificial heart using C-type piezoelectric material to avoid contact. The behavior of the piezoelectric material and the inner surface of the blood vessel will be visualized by analysis to confirm whether it can be used as an artificial heart. However, the amount of deformation of the inner surface of the blood vessel is not sufficient. Therefore, we will explore the shape of the piezoelectric material to increase the amount of deformation.

We developed a micro-fluidic device made of PDMS with a constriction that mimics capillaries in the body. The constriction had a cross-section of 3 μm x 3 μm and a length of 2500 μm.Manipulation of red blood cells was performed using this constriction. In this study, we focused on the shape of red blood cells passing through the channel. In particular, we focused on the shape before and after the flow direction, and the area in contact with the channel wall. We discuss the deformability and its application to disease prediction.

Micro-fluidic devices are widely used in biochemical experiments such as the manipulation of biological materials, mixing tests, and screening. However, depending on the test content, there are issues such as the need to integrate electrodes or the difficulty of miniaturizing peripheral equipment. In this study, we aimed to improve the functionality of the operation inside the channel by incorporating movable parts and mechanisms inside the channel. In this study, we report on a method for constructing a microstructure inside the channel.
