Existing research on internet usage and social relationships of junior and senior high school students have mostly approached their informants offline. This research is based on an online ethnography to uncover how students establish social relationships in the online world. Selecting Twitter as one of the most widely used social media among this age group, we conducted fieldwork among students who identify themselves as members of the school brass band. As a result, we found that brass band members are “looking for friends” on Twitter and connecting with strangers, and making claims for improved acknowledgment and respect towards brass band members in real life. Connecting with strangers online entails various risks. However, for students who feel that belonging to the brass band places them among the less popular groups of students in school, the online community provides them with an invaluable experience of encountering different ideas and values outside the confinement of the school setting in real life.

Cyber attack is one of the most serious threats facing many organizations in the Internet era. Technical controls attract attention, but security management is an item that really matter. The fundamental basic of the item is information security policy; documentation of security baseline for administrative control. This paper presents the result of our survey on information security policies of Japanese local governments. As it is promoted for government services for residents and companies, their high level of security is essential and increasingly important. We conducted a survey of the whole 1,741 basic local governments; cities, wards, towns, and villages. Our analysis showed that 64% of them formulated their own security policies. Only about 19% of them are up-to-date with the guideline provided by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. We also found that the formulation and revision of security policies are directly tied to the scale of the government, i.e. proportional to revenue and population.

This paper analyzed the relationship between R&D activities and firm value by using patent data provided by USPTO. We analyzed 7 Japanese firms listed on Forbes Global 2000 indexed as “Consumer Electronics.” Many former researches, by simply using these variables as stock/flow of the intangible assets, failed to explicitly explain the process in which R&D and patents effect the firm value. In focusing on the effect of R&D stocks on net profits, we overcame this limitation by using patent variables ratios which represent different aspects of R&D activities. Our panel data analysis shows that the increase of each variables significantly explains the increase of Tobin's Q. This does not only reaffirm the importance of patent related activities on firm value, but also indicate that these variables can be the useful proxies for assessing firm's innovation capability.

Tourism is viewed as one of the most promising industry to revitalize economies and create employment opportunities in Japan. Meanwhile, Chinese tourism market is rapidly growing. Mainland China has become the largest inbound tourists source country of Japan in 2015. Under this back ground, effective policies are important to attract more Chinese tourists. This study aims to verify factors that influence travel destinations selection when Chinese tourists visit Japan by regression analysis. Upon verification, the number of annual Chinese tourists in 47 prefectures in Japan is used as the dependent variable. Based on previous studies, we take five independent variables, which are the level of commercial prosperity, the level of cultural charm, the level of popularity in China, the level of human exchange between the region and China, and the level of transportation convenience. This study reconfirms factors influencing the selection of tourist destinations of Chinese tourists and whether there is a change with time transition. The result of this study can be used as an evidence for making tourism promotion policies.
