Using plastic instead of metal for the material of parts is effective to improve the productivity of watch movements. Thus, we tried to use the engineering plastic for watch parts as many as possible, and developed an analog quartz watch using the plastic for the main plate, the train wheel bridge, the circuit holder, the rotor, wheel No.5, and the minute wheel. This is marketed as Cal. Y12. The Y12 offers a better assembly yield and is superior to the former calibers in such qualities as durability and shock-resistance.

The efficiency n of PM-stepping Motor is defined in this paper as n = πΩ/Wmin, where Wmin is the minimum input energy reguired for the ordinary step motion, π the rotor mean pass of the 2-pole PM-stepping motor driven by Wmin, and Ω the frictional load acting on the motor. The efficiency is calculated through the simulation in which the expressions corresponding to the differential equations (1)and (2) in the paper are used. Many sample motors are examined for the identity test between the motions obtained by the simulation and those by the stepping motors in practice. The results obtained are as follows : 1) When the torque ratio z is introduced as the ratio of frictional load to index torque amplitude, the optimum value of z is nearly equal to 3 from the points of view of the efficiency and the reliability of stepping motor. 2) The optimum setting angle of the rotor by the index torque is approximately 45 degrees from the same point of view as above. 3) The method of calculation to obtain the optimum frictional load of stepping motor is introduced.

The works for drawing up standard on the accuracy indication for quartz watches and clocks are going on in Sub-Committee (SC11) of ISO/TC 114 (Horology). The purposes are to unify the method of the accuracy indication and the related test methods for the accuracy of quartz watches and clocks internationally and to prevent unreasonally overrated indications. Proposals for the establishment of this standard have been submitted to the SC11 from Japan (N10 for watches, N11 for clocks), from Germany (N12 for watclhes, N13 for clocks), and from Switzerland (N24 for watches ). The present paper gives the results of an experiment conducted at the JHII for examining and comparing these proposals in practice.
