It is well known that the periodic helical structure of a ferroelectric SmC liquid crystal gives rise to the selective reflection. Therefore, one can determine the helical pitch by measuring the selective reflection if one knows the refractive indices of the ferroelectric liquid crystal. We have obtained the temperature dependence of the helical pitch of a ferroelectric SmC liquid crystal mixture CS-1017 by measuring the selective reflection in a homeotropically aligned cell. The helical pitch increases as the temperature rises, and then decreases near the SmC-SmA transition point. We think that the helical pitch in the homeotropically aligned cell can be determined more accurately than that of a homogeneously aligned cell, because the wall anchoring effect in the homeotropically aligned cell is weaker. The higher order reflections by distortion of the helical structure were detected when a weak dc electric field was applied normal to the helical axis, and they satisfied the Bragg condition. Therefore, the helical pitch can be also determined by the higher order reflettions, because the helical pitch does not stretch in such a weak electric field.

A new quartz watch, "Step Melody", has been developed. The second hand of this clock swings to and fro with a melody produced in the watch. The melody is made during the period of musical notes, while the motor to make swing the second hand is driven during the period of rests. Thus, an epoch-making watch breaking out from convention only to tell time, which make people enjoy time swinging with melody has been developed. This paper describes the construction and the operation of this watch.

An object of this paper is to clarify resonant frequency and frequency temperature characteristics of a flexural mode tuning fork type quartz crystal resonator, taking account of plate thickness, rotary inertia, and shear force. A tuning fork type quartz crystal resonator can be considered as two cantilevers. Therefore, equations of motion for the resonator derived from an energy method are solved with the boundary condition of a free-clamped end. Consequently, the obtained frequency equation is expressed as a function of width, length, and thickness. From this equation, resonant frequency and frequency temperature coefficients versus a dimensional ratio are calculated. These results are Compared with the measured values.

A new method of constructing a high contrast MIM liquid crystal display (LCD) is described. Recently, electrical products using LCDs such as small handy color TV receivers and video recorders have come into the market. We have produced LCDs which contain the MIM switches op the substrate of the panels for electrical product use. The new displays we have developed are cheap and of high quality and reliability. We intend to apply them to personal computers, and etc. The MIM LC panels we designed have high Δn・d value, and we have succeeded in completing the high picture-quality panels. The characteristics of the panels are also described here.

We have developed a series of sports watch "CASIO Alti-Depth Meter" which is equipped with three measuring functions, altimeter, barometer, and depthmeter, for the first time in the world. Development of very small-sized ( 7.4φ,2.85t) semi-conductor pressure sensor circuits (driver, amplifier, A/D converter, etc) has made us to produce this series successfuly. Items described in this paper are as follows: (1) method of measuring altitude, (2) structure and characteristics of the pressure sensor, and (3) structures and characteristics of the pressure sensor circuits in LSI.
