    Ground beetles sampled with pitfalls in the tea plantations were investigated to estimate the effect of farming systems on the species diversity of ground beetles. In addition, the effects of the number of traps and the period of investigation on the diversity indices were analyzed to determine the minimum procedure for the investigation. The result showed that farming systems did not affect the number of species or the diversity indices of ground beetles. The number of traps affected the number of species, but not the species diversity. Longer period of investigation seemed to be better for the estimation of the diversity. As a minimum procedure, 3 traps and 6 months were required to evaluate a reliable estimation of the diversity of ground beetles.

    An experiment was conducted in screened houses to examine the effect of insecticides on density suppression of the oriental tea tortrix, Homona magnanima Diakonoff, by an egg parasitoid, Trichogramma dendrolimi Matsumura. Ethiprole-thiacloprid, with low insecticidal activity against T. dendrolimi, was sprayed in plot A, and tolfenpyrad, with high insecticidal activity against T. dendrolimi, was sprayed in plot B. Ethiprole-thiacloprid was significantly less harmful to parasitism of H. magnanima eggs by T. dendrolimi than tolfenpyrad. The density of H. magnanima larvae tended to be affected by differences in insecticides, but no significant difference was observed between Plot A and B. These results suggested that ethiprole-thiacloprid was less harmful to density suppression of H. magnanima by T. dendrolimi than tolfenpyrad.

    The heat flow and thermal efficiency of a tea leaf parcher were examined. The inputed heat for green tea leaves was calculated to be about 3,300kJ/kg for the cylinder pan, about 530kJ/kg for the fixed pan, of which 35.7% for the cylinder pan, 21.3% for the fixed pan was used as the heat of evaporation. The thermal efficiency of the cylinder pan increased slightly as the set temperature increased, but that of the fixed pan did not change under the range of experimental condition used. Thermal efficiencies were 36.7% for the cylinder pan, 16.4% for the fixed pan.

    γ-Aminobutyric acid (GABA), caffeine and pheophorbide-a of tea leaves soaked in water were analyzed.
    1) The amounts of GABA increased over 1.5mg/g by soaking them in water for 6 hours in the first crop of tea leaves, and for 15 hours in the second crop of tea leaves.
    2) The amount of caffeine had a tendency to decrease by soaking them in water.
    3) The amount of pheophorbide-a increased by soaking them in water.
    4) The amount of GABA in crude tea produced by soaking in water for 15 hours was 1.61mg/g~2.80mg/g for the first crop of tea and 1.60mg/g for the second crop of tea. However a particularly offensive odor was observed in every crop.
    5) The result of this study showed that the amounts of GABA were increased by soaking in water, but caffeine decreased. It became clear that the amount of pheophorbide-a in water soaked tea leaves was less than the standard value established in processed chlorella.

    An experiment using the cesium tracer method was conducted to clarify the contamination route of radioactive cesium detected in tea leaves following the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station of Tokyo Electric Power Company. The results showed that cesium content in tea leaves was easily increased by foliar application of cesium and that very little cesium was absorbed by soil application.
