  • A technique for custom fabrication of mouthguards during mixed dentition period

    Custom fabricated mouthguards are useful in protecting athletes from oral injury in contact sports, such as rugby football, boxing, karate, American football and ice hockey. Junior athletes also enjoy contact sports and have a similar risk of oral injury. For that reason wearing a mouthguard, especially a custom made type, has been proposed. A large number of reports have been published that described effects of mouthguards on oral injuies in various contact sports. Moreover, it is well documented how to make the mouthguard including press-fit techniqus, vacuum-forming techniqus and lost-wax techniqus using thermoforming materials. It has been previously reported how to fabricate protective mouthguards for young athletes with mixed dentition. However, a detailed technique has not been well described. This article focused the most description on the fabrication technique for mixed dentition and reported one typical example of a custom-made mouthguard for a 10 year-old child. The most important point of the mouthguard design for mixed dentition is to set an outline predicting the teeth position at several weeks or months later. Furthermore, the shape of newly elapsed permanent teeth is created on the stone model and then the thermoforming material is applied. As a result, the mouthguard made with those techniques was found well fit to mixed dentition and stable for a period of time.
