Due to the economic restructuring, brownfields such as former industrial sites, landfill sites, and coalfields are in the time of changing the its uses of the land. These sites may suffer from land contamination due to the previous activities on the land, and if there are contamination, approaches to treat contaminated land is inevitable, in order to prevent land contamination problems. This study is to clarify the process of approaches of contaminated land and redevelopment by investigating three cases and to seek for better way forward in Japan. The research method used is the interviews.
From the results, it became clear that English Partnerships (Present; Regional Development Agencies) and Scottish Enterprise have been providing the funding and linking the approaches of contaminated land and redevelopment, which also enables to reduce cost and time. Local authorities maintains information on land by the database and communicate with other departments and organisations from the stage of investigation. Lastly, job creation is also considered to be important when redeveloping the land, as well as to improve the environment by investigation and remediation.
