Child abuse immensely influences victims' life afterwards. In many cases victims suffer from psychosomatical symptoms. Immature and defenseless children adapt to the situation in warped and unbalanced ways as they are abused by overwhelming violence and neglected over a long period of time. As a result unbalanced character remains with them long after abuses stopped and victims grew up. Child abuse victims find it difficult to establish stable a relationship with others and tend to resort to violent behavior and abusive words. And they dislike to be controlled by others and won't believe other people. Therefore it is difficult for a social worker to establish a relationship necessary to effective help. This report explains child abuse effects psycho-physical influence and some way to treatment.

"Recently the increase of social withdrawal syndrome is posing a serious problem in JAPAN. The measures for social withdrawal syndrome have continued since 2002 to 2004 in Oita Mental Health Welfare Center. As a result, 211 persons are identified with social withdrawal syndrome after servey in 2002, in Oita Prefecture (population of Oita Prefecture : about 1 ,210,000 persons) . Thirty-one per cent of 211 persons are over thirty years old. So-called the increase of aged social withdrawal syndrome is clearly suggested. Fifty per cent of 211 persons are socially withdrawn over 5 years duration. This result strongly suggests that there are many cases of social withdrawal syndrome with prolonged stay at home. Two case reports of social withdrawal syndrome are presented. Our experience shows that interpersonal-problems need to be focused in treatment, and sufferring from vocational identity should be treated with vocational guidance and jobsupport. These are common problems among young adolescents and part-time workers at the present time. Today, young people are in the difficult times when they can not reach adulthood without proper social support."

"The diagnostic system for personality disorders in psychiatry have formed at first by E. Kraepelin, and further developed by K. Schneider, and now reached to the stage of internationally standardized operational system such as DSM-III and DSM-IV by the American Psychiatric Association. Today, the issue of personality disorders is facing two subjects, as follows. 1) what kind of therapeutic approach should be taken in modern society? 2) How the labeling effect and prejudice of the expression of ""personality disorders"" should be concurred, and how the mental health support system should develop in the field of school health, occupational health and local health politics. The author reviewed numbers of relevant literatures, and made several suggestions concerning the establishment of desirable mental health support system for those suffering from personality disorders."

"For the past 40 years I have collected information from Japanese mass media regarding childhood and adolescent mental problems. The focus was on how such problems have evolved and changed during this time period. I summarized my findings into the following categories : 1) Inertia 2) Childhood narcissism 3) Lack of self-control 4) Tendency towards psycho physiological disorders In my experience, I have seen that parent-child relationships often show the following characteristics : 1) The modern-day relationship is unstable due to self-doubt 2) They do not know how to obtain support from others 3) They do not know how to cure their own wounds 4) They are not proud of their lives or themselves I described these problems, and offered possible solutions. Family life is not stable these days : therefore children often lack the foundation required for growth. As a result, childhood mental problems have become increasingly complicated and difficult to cure."

"The purpose of this paper is to examine mental development and adaptive supports of patients with eating disorders who are recently increasing rapidly and creating social problems in Japan. This disease may be precipitated and increased under the influence of high degree of economic growth and social reformation. In this report, we assumed that parents' rearing attitudes contributed to the onset and duration of the disease and investigated parents' rearing attitudes using Egma Minnen Betraffande Uppfostran (EMBU) . As a result, the patients assessed their parents were rejective and lacking in emotional warmth. But, their own personality traits were found to be hyper-sensitive, self-suppressive and obsessive. Therefore, this type of relationship between parents and children resulted in their inadequate emotional exchanges. Also, from Keys' preceding study and our study of chronic cases, it is suggested that half-starvation in patients with eating disorders would be an obstacle to their mind and body development. In eating disorders, as the patients have impaird body and mind development, it is necessary to facilitale their nutritional improvement first and then provide support to promote their the adaptability. We also reported the important roles of restoring unsuitable emotional exchanges between patients and their parents and providing active support in compliance with conditions of the disease soon after making their diagnosis."

"The purpose of this study was to investigate how self-esteem of patients with eating disorders correlates with their eating attitudes, mood states, duration of illness, and BMI. Their self-esteem was also compared across the all eating disorders subtypes. Subjects were 103 females with eating disorders : 29 with anorexia nervosa, restricting type (AN-R) , 21 with anorexia nervosa, binge eating/purging type (AN-BP), 41 with bulimia nervosa, purging type (BN-P) , 8 with bulimia nervosa, nonpurging type (BN-NP) and 4 with eating disorder not otherwise specified (NOS) . The subjects' self-esteem was measured with Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) . Other variables were measured using Eating Attitude Test-26 (EAT), Bulimic Investigatory Test, Edinburgh (BITE) and Profile of Mood States (POMS) . Correlations between RSES scores, on the one hand, and EAT scores, BITE scores. POMS scores, duration of illness, and BMI, on the other, were calculated, using the Pearson's product-moment correlation coefficient and multiple logistic regression analysis. T-test was used to compare the RSES across the all subtype groups. The results showed that the RSES scores correlated significantly with EAT and BITE scores and all POMS subscales. However, there was no significant correlation between the RSES scores and duration of illness or BMI. When multiple regression analysis was used, the partial correlation between RSES scores and the EAT scores, POMS scores for vigor and confusion was pronounced. The RSES score was highest in the AN-R group, and lowest in the BN-NP group. The RSES score of the AN-R group was significantly higher than the AN-BP and BN-NP groups. The BN-P group showed significantly higher RSES score than the BN-NP group."
