This article discusses the questions: What kind of an organization is the Records Management Society of Japan (RMS Japan)? What are the objectives? What kind of People are society members? What activities are expected of the members? What is records management? What is records management for? What are the keywords of records management? Various motives work when people participate in an organization. RMS Japan opens its gate to occurpation-oriented, profession-oriented, or calling-oriented people. Among them, profession-oriented participants can contribute to and benefit from the society most effectively. Life cycle of record, systems approach, and management function are the keywords of records management. The life cycle concept enables us to prepare retention schedules for the whole life of records. Systems approach integrates autonomy and interdependence of subsystems. Management function plans, organizes, controls, and coordinates human activities relating to records through the life cycle concept and systems approach, and makes an organization achieve its goals. Records are kept for future generations. Records management cultivates serendipity.
