This paper reviews the current situation of metadata. First, current major topics related to metadata are reviewed: (1) embedded metadata in RDFa within Web pages, and its use by search engines, (2) Linked Data to expose, share, and connect data via URI, and Linking Open Data project to link among various open datasets in the way of Linked Data, and (3) metadata exposure in RDF and SKOS by national libraries and others. Second, recent developments in Dublin Core are reviewed. And finally, key concepts in Semantic Web, like RDF, RDF Schema, and OWL, are touched on briefly.

This article reviews metadata activities at national and international level chiefly within the library community. First, it mentions the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative as an example of international activity, then metadata standards maintained at the Library of Congress which are considered as international standards rather than national ones. Next, it introduces the projects of national libraries in the UK, Germany and France. It also introduces activities at Europeana. eu and those in Australia and New Zealand. Finally, it explains activities at the National Diet Library and the National Institute of Informatics in Japan.

This paper describes design process of metadata in CiNii, which is an academic information service provided by National Institute of Informatics. We develop its bibliographic metadata based on several web standards such as OpenSearch and RDF. We also generate author ID by machine learning and user participation. The number of access to the metadata is rapidly increasing and recorded 30-40% of overall traffic.

Metadata, which has been known only among librarians and other professionals, has got to be diffused all over the "real" world. This change has caused by the World Wide Web. Ordinary citizens have come to generate reviews for products on e-commerce sites, and tags on photo sharing services with consciously. In this paper, I analyze the process of that metadata usage has been diffused, and discuss the way to adopt the situation where everybody utilize metadata everywhere in daily life.

A real information explosion occurred when Web2.0 reentered corporate CRM systems and workflows, so organizing unstructured or semi-structured UGC data became almost essential. A key technology to solving this problem is automatic Metadata extraction, which enables personal information hiding, automatic posting of calendar data, and creating huge market of personalized advertisement among others.
