Development of computers has lead to an OPAC used as an extremely fast means for retrieval information on a large collection of books and periodicals held in public libraries. Such an OPAC has gradually forced the conventional catalog cards out of practical use in many public libraries, where terminals are insted major retrieval means. The report describes the current application of an OPAC to the Kanagawa Prefectural Information Network System employed in the Kanagawa Prefectural Library. It also discusses the future development of the OPAC to be applied in other public libraries.

In December 1990, new information retrieval system, which was personal computer and CD-ROM based stand-alone system, for open-stack room become operational. The system provide following feature:1. the ability to stove vast sum of bibliographic data in compact disc 2. provision for a flexible and rapid approach to holding bibliographic data 3. minimum costs of the hardware and software 4. realization of data renewal turning hard disc to good account The data for the system were transferred from the MARC database already stored by the in-house system. Till up to now, library users of open-stack room (mainly undergraduate student) effectively get the information of bibliographic data. We are just seeing that, taking advantage of new technology, CD-ROM system can drastically increase access to the library resources.
