    Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communication (MIC), Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) and Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) co-organized an Advisory Panel on Promotion of the Use of Publications in a Digital Networked Society in March 2010. The author participated in the advisory panel and two working teams - technology and usage working teams - under the panel. In this article, the author describes some issues and future perspectives which came up with him from the discussions at working teams. This article is not written as a scientific paper to analyze the characteristics of digital books and publishing but is primarily written as an article based on the author's experiences in digital library, digital archive and metadata research. This article first mentions the background and the stand points of the author and then discusses the issues and perspectives on digital publishing and digital books.

    The people call this year "the e-book first year". Therefore the production of e-book contents and the construction of the distribution system are hurried. The realization of the next point is demanded from this purpose. Improve by the productivity of electronic book contents. That various e-book devices can use various e-book contents. Make the environment that offers various e-book contents to the various e-book devices. On this account the standardization of the generic file format is demanded. I report it about the present conditions and the standardization of the generic format.

    EPUB specification development as the global e-book format is progressing to the next version. EPUB specifications consist of web technologies such as annotation, navigation, metadata, pagination, layout, and HTML5/CSS3 etc. Experts discuss applying web technologies and solutions for CJKT issues in next version of EPUB. The CJKT issues consist of vertical writing, ruby, line breaking rule, and character set extension etc. In this paper, we summarize the current status of EPUB standardization activities, focusing on CJKT discussions. And we also describe the future works of them.
