    Impact vibration s in a mass-damper-spring system with a degree of freedom are simulated on a digital computer and bifurcation phenomena are observed by mapping. When the coefficient of restitution increases (or the damping coefficient decreases), a periodic solution turns into chaos through the period doubling bifurcations, the chaos turns into a periodic solution through the saddle-node bifurcation, and the region of the clearance where the chaos exists becomes narrow.

    This paper is concerned with the natural vibrations of a spherical shell with variable thicknesses in the meridional direction. The governing equations of motion have already been given in the author's previous paper. In this paper, the distribution of thickness is expressed in a quadratic polynomial, and is substituted into the above equations. Four solutions of the equations required in the case of a hemispherical shell with a free edge can be obtained analytically by the method of series solution, and the corresponding frequency equation is derived. Natural frequencies for several circumferential wave numbers calculated. Lastly, to illustrate the utility of the present method, the numerical results are compared with the experimental data.

    The damped vibration of a system with a contact surface has been analyzed by considering an occurrence of micro-slip and residual displacement ant the contact surface. The damping characteristics of an oscillatory system have been investigated by clarifying the relationships between the logarithmic decrement and the amplitude, the angular frequency and the amplitude. From the calculated results, it has been clarified that the logarithmic decrement depends on the amplitude, and that it takes a maximum value on a certain amplitude. Furthermore, in case of the existence of a linear spring parallel to the contact surface, the logarithmic decrement reduces with the increasing strength of the linear spring. The angular frequency for the larger amplitude shows close agreement with the value decided by a linear spring. However, in the region of the tangential micro-displacement, it depends on the amplitude and increases with decreasing amplitude.

    An analytical method of flexural vibration of a three-layered circular plate with a viscoelastic core is presented for non-axially symmetric modes, and damping properties are investigated numerically. For plates with elastic layers of equal Poisson's ratio, an eighth order system of equations of motion is derived, and it is shown that a solution can be obtained in terms of Bessel functions. Axisymmetric modes are included as a special case in the present method. Numerical calculation can be carried out efficiently by use of the present method, so that this method is considered to be useful for the design of multi-layered structures. For axisymmetric and non-axially symmetric modes, frequencies and loss factors of plates with clamped edges and free edges are calculated numerically for a wide range of introduced parameters. The results are discussed and graphically presented

    The present investigation concerns lateral vibrations of a rotating shaft driven by a universal joint which has viscous and Coulomb's frictions. Periodic forces are obtained when viscous and Coulomb's frictions act on the relative angular motion between a cross-pin s and yokes of the universal joint, and the character of the vibration s is explained. The flexible driven shaft is supported by a universal joint at one end and a ball bearing at the other end. The driven shaft carries a balanced rotor. Analyses and experiments show that vibrations caused by viscous friction between the cross-pin and the yokes enlarge with an increase of the joint angle but can scarcely occur, and that vibrations caused by Coulomb's friction are independent of the joint angle.

    The hydroelastically coupled oscillations of a liquid and the elastic side walls of a rectangular tank partially filled with a liquid, in response to the lateral excitation, are investigated. It is well-known that there are tow types of liquid motion, i.e., sloshing and bulging. In the present paper, the sloshing motion, in which the liquid surface oscillation may be of finite amplitude, is analyzed taking the nonlinearity into account. The time histories of the liquid surface displacement and the wall deformation are calculated to the harmonic, and earthquake excitations by the modal analysis approach. An experiment was conducted using a model tank, and the vibration responses of a liquid and the walls were measured. A good agreement was found between the theoretical and experimental results.

    Theoretical analyses are presented for nonlinear bending vibrations of beam having variable cross sections subjected to periodic lateral forces, considering the effects of initial static deflection and axial displacement. By use of the Galerkin procedure, assuming the form function which is composed of the finite power series and the trigonometrical function, basic equations are reduced to coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The steady state harmonic solution is obtained with harmonic balance method. Numerical calcuations are carried out for the six degrees of freedom, nonlinear responses of principal, super-harmonic and subharmonic vibration are determined for various shapes of the beam, with initial deflection and axial displacement. Especially, the characteristic features of the principal responses with the asymmetric mode of vibration are clarified.

    In order to simulate the lateral vibration of bogie car easily, both in quality and in quantity, a calculation method was studied using a linear model which considered the contact force between the wheel and rail. The calculation results were compared with the data of a Shinkansen electric car obtained in a test running on an artificially set lateral alignment track irregularity. As the result, it was made clear that the calculation did not coincide with the characteristics of real cars because of the large elasticity in truck turning. But by decreasing the elasticity and restricting the wheelset excursion in the play between the flange and rail, the calculation results became similar to the features of real cars. It was also confirmed that decreasing the lateral elasticity of the secondary spring was effective in reducing of lateral vibration.

    The diffracted sound field around a rectangular enclosure is computed by Boundary Element Method (BEM). In the computation, the field is analyzed by 2-dimensional BEM, by means of converting the distance-damping effect due to spherical wave. The distribution of sound pressures around the enclosure is numerically evaluated by this method, and compared with experimental results obtained using a sound visualization device consisting of an electronic switch circuit system composed of three color-light emitting diodes, installed on a microphone, functioning to the magnitude of sound pressure level ; a microphone scanning device ; and a photographing set. The computed results agree fairly well with experimental ones.

    A method of measuring acoustic intensity automatically is presented in this paper. The method uses measurements of the cross spectrum of the pressures at two closely spaced microphones. The two microphones used are arranged side by side with a short distance between their axes, and combined symmetrically with a holder axis. The holder can be turned on its axis by steps of a constant angle for measuring three directional components of an acoustic intensity vector. The acoustic intensity at a field point can be automatically measured by such composed microphones. This method is actually applied to a visualization technique of the flow pattern of sound energy emitted from a resonant modes. As a result, an acoustic intensity probe composed of two microphones, as used in this study, has been proved to be an apprepriate sensor for the automatic measurement of spatial acoustic intensity.

    Fundamental equations of a multi-concentric cylindrical heat exchanger that can treat flow rate change are obtained. Matrix transfer functions of the outlet temperature change to the flow rate change are gained and the theoretical frequency responses for the four types of heat exchanger are calculated to show the influence of the heat transfer through the baffle cylinders. Numerical results of the four types are analyzed and compared form the viewpoint of control and it is shown that a counter-flow type has the best dynamic characteristics. Furthermore, it is suggested thet the dynamic characteristics of the multi-concentric cylindrical heat exchanger can be approximated by another heat exchanger called the cone type heat exchanger of the second order, and the fundamental equations of the cone type heat exchanger are obtained.

    Using two-disk machine, the processes leading up to the occurrence of scoring on carburized rollers were investigated in detail, under six different conditions of asperity interaction brought about by three combinations of the direction of machining marks of high speed roller/low speed roller(circumferential/circumferential, axial/circumferential, or axial/axial) and two drive ratios of two rollers (integral2 or hunting 1.95). The scoring loads were influenced by the combination of the direction of machining marks. as the surface hardness of the test rollers was high, there was not significant difference in the running-in process by the drive ratio. And so the state of oil film-formation was little influenced by the drive ratio, but markedly influenced by the direction of the machining marks. Although the break down of oil film did not always proceed to scoring, it was suggested that, in the case of carburized rollers, scoring limits are influenced not only by the state of oil film-formation but also by the severity of asperity interaction.

    This paper presents a study on the helix angle factor in considering the difference between root stresses of the helical gear and its virtual spur gear in the normal section. The calculation of bending strength of the helical gear is commonly based on the virtual spur gear. The root stresses of helical gears with various helix angles, numbers of teeth and overlap ratios were calculated, and the meshing position of maximum root stress (worst loading position) was examined. On the basis of these results, the helix angle factor of helical gears was clarified, in which the effect of load distribution on the line of contact is taken into account. Furthermore, the helix angle factors used in the various formulas for the bending strength of helical gear were compared with the results obtained in this paper.

    This paper presents a study on the effect of radial clearance between a planet gear and shaft on the root stress of a planet gear. The stress analysis of planet gears with various radial shaft clearances by the 2-dimensional finite element method (FEM), in which the elastic contact between a planet gear and shaft was taken into consideration, was carried out under different normal tooth loads, and the relation between the root stress and normal tooth load, the effect of radial shaft clearance on root stress, the position of maximum root stress and the cyclic stress under running conditions were examined. Furthermore stress analysis of planet gears with various radial shaft clearances and rim thicknesses was carried out and the stress state of a planet gear with radial shaft clearance was clarified to a considerable extent.

    In the present paper, a practical formula for the root bending stress of helical gears was investigated. The load sharing factor of helical gears with various helix angles, numbers of teeth and overlap ratios was calculated and, on the basis of the calculated results, an approximate equation for the load sharing factor at the worst loading position of helical gears was derived. By using approximate equations for the load sharing factor and helix angle factor, in which the effect of load distribution on the line of contact is taken into account, a new practical formula for the root bending stress of helical gears proposed. The validity of the proposed formula was confirmed by comparing the results by this formula with those by the various conventional formulas for the bending strength of helical gears and experimental results.

    A skew bevel gear, whose contact ratio is larger than a straight bevel gear, can be expected to be superior to a straight bevel gear on strength, vibration and noise. And the characteristics of a skew bevel gear. In the present paper, the dynamic behavior of a skew bevel gear was investigated under various gear operating conditions, using a power circulating type bevel gear testing machine, and by measuring the tooth root stresses, the torsional and bending vibrations of the gear shaft, and the vibrating displacements in three directions perpendicularly intersecting each other on a skew bevel gear. In comparison with these measured data, the dynamic characteristic of a skew bevel gear became clear.

    To develop a practical method for getting an insight about the influence of factors such as gear dimensions gear manufacturing and alignment errors on the running performance of gears, a new simplified method to analyze gear vibration was introduced in the previous report. It is a method to reduce a forced vibrational system with parametric exciting term. In this report, the vibration of a pair of involute spur gears is dealt with, and the nature and the accuracy of the solution of this approximation method is discussed for cases where the involute spur gears have several kinds of tooth form errors and alignment errors. The solution of the approximation method and that of the original exact method were compared with measured with measured results of teh vibration level and of the frequency construction of gear vibration, and the scope of application of this simple approximation method is shown.

    To clarify the seizure resistance and the frictional characteristics of rollers with various coatings, two roller tests on rollers coated with copper, graphite and molybdenum disulfide were carried out using an Amsler machine, and the flash temperature rise on the contacting surface when the rollers were seized was calculated. Further, the relation between the test results in the two roller machines and the previous test results in a Soda-type four ball machine and a power-circulating gear machine on the seizure resistance and the frictional characteristics of the coatings were estimated. From the experimental results a considerable relation between the seizure resistance in the two roller tests and the scoring resistance in the gear tests was recognized, and the variation in the coefficient of friction in the two roller tests was different from that in the four ball tests.

    The equations of motion of arbitrary moving links and the constraint equations of pairs have been generally derived with consideration of elastic deformations out of ideal moving planes of links and three-dimensional offsets, which makes in possible to construct systematically the equations of motion of planar link mechanisms. Applying the equations to a crack-and-rocker mechanism whose coupler and rocker are elastic links, the influences of the link elasticities, the crank speed and the transmission angle upon the angles of torsions and the deflections of elastic links, the joint forces and moments and the dynamic deviations of rocker angle have been discussed together with experiments.

    The authors have already analyzed, both theoretically and experimentally, the kineto-elastodynamic characteristics of planar link mechanisms with three-dimensional offsets. In the present paper, a kineto-elastodynamic analysis of a crank-and -rocker mechanism with consideration of bearing clearances and three-dimensional offsets has been carried out. The effects of the magnitudes of bearing clearances and three-dimensional offsets has been carried out. The effects of the magnitudes of bearing clearances and three-dimensional offsets upon the angles of torsions and the deflections of elastic links, the joint forces and moments, the dynamic deviations of rocker angle, and the relative motions between pairing elements have been theoretically and experimentally revealed.

    Mild steel strips are ironed by various kinds of tool material, that is, alloy tool steel SKD 11, cemented carbide V2, ceramic Si3N4 and surface SKD 11 by diffusing coating VC, and with some oiliness agents and extreme pressure additives, using the strip-ironing type friction testing machine. The influence of ironing travel, ironing reduction and lublicity of some kinds of lubricants on galling behaviours are examined, and the combined effects of compatibility and lubricity are clarified. Galling types, which are peculiar to die materials, cannot be effected by the above three factors. The effects of decreasing the friction coefficient do not appear in the case of Si3N4 and VC, but they appear clearly for SKD 11. Improvement in limiting ironing reduction for galling are recognized for V2.

    In the former report, the two step forging process utilizing divided flow was concluded to be useful for the precision cold die forging of a spur gear under a low working pressure. This conclusion, however, was obtained by adopting the test material of aluminium A 1100-O. In this report, the application to a steel product and several constructions of the two step method are examined in order to clarify the usefulness of this process more universally. Through these examinations, it is concluded that the maximum fractional working pressure required for the filling up of a spur gear with a steel S10C is less than 3.0 and the filling up behavior of S10C is almost the same as that of A 1100-O. When the two step process constructed with mandrel movement is carried out by a double action press, it becomes more effective for decreasing the working pressure and saving the material. Thus, it is confirmed that the process utilizing divided flow can be used practically.

    This report presents a simple method of analysis of transient pressure waves in gases contained in tubes which have arbitrary cross-sectional shapes. Damping due to viscosity and heat conduction is taken account of. Solutions for pressure under conditions where step or other changes of pressure are given at the ends of the tubes are expressed in the forms of finite series in terms of the co-error functions of others. An experimental results is shown for verification of the validity of the theory.
