Mild steel strips are ironed by various kinds of tool material, that is, alloy tool steel SKD 11, cemented carbide V2, ceramic Si
3N4 and surface SKD 11 by diffusing coating VC, and with some oiliness agents and extreme pressure additives, using the strip-ironing type friction testing machine. The influence of ironing travel, ironing reduction and lublicity of some kinds of lubricants on galling behaviours are examined, and the combined effects of compatibility and lubricity are clarified. Galling types, which are peculiar to die materials, cannot be effected by the above three factors. The effects of decreasing the friction coefficient do not appear in the case of Si
3N
4 and VC, but they appear clearly for SKD 11. Improvement in limiting ironing reduction for galling are recognized for V2.
