In rovariotomized adult newts, Triturus pyrrhogaster, were given intraperitoneal injections of estriol, DES, estrone, testosterone or DCA, singly or in combination with progesterone, and the activity of alkaline phosphatase in the epithelial cells of the oviducts was studied histochemically. After injections of progesterone, estriol, estrone, testosterone or DCA for a prolonged period, the cytoplasm of the epithelial cells of the oviducts exhibited a strong or moderate reaction of alkaline phosphatase in a majority of cases, while following injections of DES, the cells showed only a weak reaction of the enzyme. Under the conditions of the present experiments, estriol, DES and estrone attenuated the enzyme-activating faculty of progesterone, while testosterone and DCA were without effect in this respect. The findings were discussed in relation to the effects of progesterone and other steroids on the ovulation in amphibians.

Chromosomal studies reported here were based on venous blood and bone marrow cultures from 4 children with Down's syndrome. One of them was exposed to the atomic bomb in intrauterine condition, while the other three were born to the exposed mothers in Hiroshima. The 4 cases uniformly showed 47 chromosomes with no. 21 trisomy. No other chromosomal aberrations were found in these children and their mothers.

(1) The final reaction product obtained by the enzymatic degradation of myoglobin due to the enzyme extracted from bovine liver homogenate was characterized.
(2) The product was failed to crystallize at the present time, however, the structure of heme part seemed to be quite analogous to Fig. 3. Proposed structure of the tetrapyrrole part of the final reaction product formed from the enzymatic degradation of myoglobin. Table II. Physical properties of 2, 4-dinitrophenylhydrazone formed from the reaction product of the enzymatic degradation of myoglobin, compared with other 3 kinds of hydrazones 656mμ absorbing substance, the product obtained by the degradation of pyridine-hemichromogen by the same enzyme.
(3) The enzymatic degradation of myoglobin will be catalyzed by heme α-methenyl oxygenase as same as pyridine-hemichromogen and hemoglobin-haptoglobin complex, but further experiments are now in progress.

In our histological analysis of the kitten brain using the Golgi Cox method, it was found that the application of reflecting illumination provides a clear relief of the soma surface including its relationship with the dendrites. Utilizing this method of illumination, it was possible to represent faithfully the shape of the soma photogrammetrically. This has provided a means for precisely estimating the dimensions of the neuron soma.

Two spots do sometimes arise from authentic sample of N-acetylneuraminic acid, in chromatography of Whatman No. 1 paper using n-butanol-pyridine-water (6:4:3). Normal chromatogram of the acid is obtained by the use of Whatman No. 1 paper washed with 1% hydrochloric acid and water. The abnormalities occurring Table III. Chromatography of N-acetylneuraminic acid on 1% hydrochloric acid-treated Whatman No. 1 paper in n-butanol-pyridine-water (6:4:3) in chromatography may be caused by the ion exchange of the hydrogen ions of the acid with the cations of the paper.

N-Acetylneuraminic acid was isolated from mucoprotein in human ovarian cyst fluid by both hydrolysis with sulfuric and trichloroacetic acids. Identification of the N-acetylneuraminic acid was carried out by the measurement of melting point, elementary analysis, specific rotation, infrared spectra, and chromatographic and electrophoretic mobilities on papers.

Transferrin type C-C in adult human serum was purified by chromatography on TEAE-cellulose column. The sample exhibiting a single protein fraction on starch gel electrophoresis was separated into two subfractions. One of these, which we have termed the “minor component” and which comprises about 5-10 per cent of the total radioactivity of transferrin, was eluted by 0.012M sodium phosphate buffer, pH 7.1 or 7.3, prior to the elution of the “major component” of transferrin C-C. When concentrated, it was cleared that the minor component showed a mobility somewhat slower than
the major component toward the anode on vertical starch gel electrophoresis.
