This paper presents a new method to control of transmittance of glass by using nano plastic forming technique. Periodic arrays of sub-wavelength grooves were fabricated on glass by indenting a knife-edge type diamond tool. Groove depth was varied from 80nm to 120nm and the periodicity of grooves was varied from 250nm to 5μm. Relationship between transmittance against wavelength of light was measured by spectrometry. Results show that optical transmittance increases with the increase of the groove depth, and periodicity of grooves affects the range of wavelength where transmittance changes critically. It is explained by variation of effective refractive index due to the geometry of the groove structure. Results also show that transmittance by optimizing groove structures is higher than flat glass plate.

Electrolytically-oxidized water is different from HCl solution, and that doesn't have any bad influence on the human body and the environment. If electrolytically-oxidized water can be applied to surface treatment of the lead frame, the environmental load can reduce. Almost, by the immersion experiment, it clarified the etching operation of electrolytically-oxidized water to the copper alloy for the lead frame. As the results, the etching speed of electrolytically-oxidized water is big compared with HCl solution. Next, by the surface analysis of the test pieces, it made the influence of the electrolytically-oxidized water on the chemical composition of the surface of the copper alloy for the lead frame clear. That is, when using electrolytically-oxidized water, the oxide film in the surface of Cu-Ni alloy doesn't change but the Cu-Fe alloy oxide film becomes thick. The study indicates the electrolytically-oxidized water can be applied to the oxide film removal of Cu-Ni alloy and the wash of the Cu-Fe alloy surface.

This study aims to clarify the influence of surface topography on the photocatalytic reaction of titanium dioxide film surface. As a first step, the optimum conditions in making a thin film using titanium dioxide powder were evaluated and several films with several kinds of surface roughnesses were prepared. And, the influence of surface topography on the wettabilty of titanium dioxide films were evaluated. As a result, it was confirmed that the wettability increases with increasing both the surface roughness and actual surface area.

Recently, a robot kit called MindStorms is noticed in domestic and overseas. The DC motor is controlled by the microcomputer according to sensor information. Thus, the robot can be designed freely in hardware and software by using MindStorms. In my classes of robotics and mechatronics, MindStorms is utilized since 2000. The purpose of this study is to verify weather it is useful for education and research on robotics and mechatronics. As an illustrative example, control algorithms based on NQC and BrickOS were implemented on microcomputer controller called RCX including the MindStorms kit. Experimental results show that MindStorms kit can be sufficiently utilized for education and research on robotics and mechatronics.

The purpose of this report is to exclude risk factors based on the instance of Hiyari Hatto (near-miss accidents) experienced by school personnel and students and to make the environment in which students can participate safely in the class and extracurricular activities. By means of the risk assessment and KYT(training for predicting dangers, K:Kiken, Y:Yochi, T:Training), it has been considered how the college should control the hand-on technical training. As a result, the students have been able to work on the hand-on technical training without affecting the school facilities and the students' working site, and the number of injuries has decreased.

The origin of the name of Oscar type lens polishing machines has been investigated. Although there were lots of the explanations of lens polishing machines in the technical books, so far, we had not met the origin of "Oscar"- name machine. When rearranging the books, journals and documents on the shelf about one year ago, an old Japanese textbook (1952) was found out by chance, which was mimeographed copy and having a faded photograph of Oscar-name machine. The machine seemed to be made in Germany, according to the decipherment of painted letters. And then the company name "Oscar Ahlberndt Maschinenfabrik fur Optik" was found in German handbook (1938) owned by the Library of AIST and in Japanese report of the inspection tour in the J. of JSPE(1936).

The removing ratio of glass lapping or lapping hardness, which was established in the JOGIS (The Japan Optical Glass Industry Standard), was discussed taking account of its applications. And the useful characteristic values for not only lapping but also polishing many work materials were re-proposed. These are the specific amounts of stock removal and tool wear (μm/m/Pa) which refer to proportional constants of work or tool loss relative to speed, pressure and working time during lapping or polishing. Then a small machine has been newly proposed to get such amounts of lapping and polishing.

In this paper, a vertical seismic isolation device using bilinear spring mechanism and a ball screw type damper was made in order to obtain a vertical isolation device having large effect of seismic isolation and less static deflection. Three-dimensional seismic isolation device consisting of the vertical seismic isolation device and the horizontal seismic isolation device was made and the effects seismic of isolation were substantiated experimentally and numerically. The experimental and calculated results showed that the vertical isolation device has the natural frequency of 0.54 Hz and the static deflection of 100 mm. The maximum horizontal and vertical response acceleration decreased to about 1/7 and 1/2 respectively compared with the maximum input accelerations.

In this study, the authors propose a passive type MR (magnetorheological) damper which uses two sets of rare-earth magnets and has hardening resisting force characteristics. We also developed a semiactive type MR damper with a bypass. The resisting force characteristics of the trial dampers, and the frequency and seismic responses of a single-degree-of-freedom system supported with each damper were measured using a vibration machine. The experimental results were compared with the calculated results, and the performance of both dampers were compared.

Recently there has been a rapid increase in the consideration of data on the life cycle of products and services. This situation obviously requires the utilization of the resources of modern information technology to store, retrieve and represent the vast quantities of information involved. In particular, tools are required not only to support the efficient man-machine dialogues which enable experts to analyze calculated results, but also to facilitate transparent communications among experts, engineers and managers. However, if the data available is to be used effectively to understand interconnection and the consequences of decisions across many levels, then this data needs to be processed in a manner which supports human cognitive abilities. It is therefore proposed that we integrate advanced multi-dimensional displays with adapted information visualization into a systematic data analysis and presentation environment. In particular, we aim at providing a framework that is based on linked advanced information displays, which in turn are adapted in their data representation structure by taking into account individual viewer profiles acting as a mapping between audiences and their respective display structures.

To achieve sustainable development, mechanical parts should be reused repeatedly. For the effective re-use of parts, each reusable part is required to be under an appropriate management. For this purpose, we are proposing a system that is a combination of network agents called "Part agents" and radio frequency identification. A scheme is proposed in which Part agents generate advice for the consumer on the adequate activity of maintenance of the part based on their preference and the degradation status of the part. A simulation system of Part agents is developed to show that the proposed Part agent system would promote the reuse of parts. Using this simulation system, the effect of diversity of consumer's preference is investigated.

Reuse of products or product parts is effective to reduce environmental impact. In the design phase of sustainable products involving reusable units, it is important to set an appropriate physical life span for a reusable unit. A reusable unit should be durable for a period equal to at least two functional lives through product circulation with consideration of functional degradation of products and reusable units, and their demand. If a reusable unit has a short functional life or little demand, its having an excessive physical life span will increase environmental impact. In this study, a mathematical model of environmental impact of a reusable unit is developed. Then, a nonlinear mathematical programming problem is solved, by which an optimal physical life distribution is derived.

Electrical discharge surface treatment hereafter called MSCoating (Micro Spark Coating) has been developed. The influence on the tensile adhesive strength of the electrode density and the surface roughness was examined. Cobalt-Chromium (Co-Cr) alloy film was formed by the MSCoating on the surface of different roughness nickel (Ni) alloy workpiece. As a result, tensile adhesive strength is independent of the surface roughness. On the other hand , the film formation speed and tensile adhesive strength depend on the electrode density. Therefore, using higher density electrode, film formation speed is lower and tensile adhesive strength is higher.
