This paper gives the result of studies on the seasonal root behavior of manilagrass,
Zoysia matrella (L.) Merr., the warm season turfgrass, and creeping bentgrass,
Agrostis palustrisHuds., tlu cool season turfgrass.
A kind of the root observation box or rhizotron was used in this studies. In manilagrass, many rhizomes develop from buds that lower on the plant axis, or from buds on rhizomes, but creeping bentgrass produces stolons.
In manilagrass, during the months between late fall and winter, the roots remained white to light color. The root browning of manilagrass was most significant in spring, and spring root decline was observed, but a few white roots were observed. Manilagrass has shown a rapid development of new roots from April to May, and the root replacement has occured. In snmmer, the root system was stable.
The white active root system was observed in creeping bentgrass during winter months, and in spring, new roots rapidly increased in creeping bentgrass. During between May and June, the development of root system was observed, and in summer, the summer root decline has occured in creeping bentgrass.
