NICT have conducted on Ultra-realistic communications research for 10 years since 2006. In this research, 3D
image technology is regarded as one of core technologies. In this paper, we introduce research results of 3D image technology,
which NICT has achieved for 10 years. We also introduce Ultra-Realistic Communications Forum (URCF), which was
established in 2007 to promote and develop the technologies of ultra-realistic communications efficiently. We hope that the
activities in NICT contribute the future development of ultra-realistic communications.
Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) has been researching and developing 8K Super Hi-Vision(8K), the 7680
x 4320-pixel (UHDTV2) version of ultrahigh-definition television, for future broadcasting. 8K has 16 times larger pixel count
than conventional HDTV and the 3-D audio is realized with a 22.2 multichannel sound system. A roadmap for 8K plans to start
test broadcasting by 2016 and we aim to have 8K broadcasting service in every home by 2020. This paper describes an overall
8K system and a latest technology trend mainly focusing on the imaging system.
Highly realistic video communication, which provide feel of existence of remote users and objects, is expected to be a next generation communication using the internet. To achieve such system, it is important to reproduce not only high quality image but also sense of directivity depending on user's position. However, viewpoint image synthesis is usually not easy for live action. In this paper an approach for viewpoint image synthesis method using multi-camera images and approximate depth information, which can provide smooth motion parallax with high speed processing and high image quality, will be demonstrated.
