A wide range of industries has great expectations for 5G to create new services and solutions. DOCOMO constructed 5G Trial Sites and has been conducting comprehensive experiments that integrate radio technologies, networks, and applications since 2017. DOCOMO began the DOCOMO 5G Open Partner Program in 2018 to accelerate new 5G service co-creation with various industry partnerships such as the automotive, railway, travel, construction, manufacturing, medical and healthcare, video, contents, sports, and games. The program offers 5G testing environments called DOCOMO 5G Open Lab and 5G Open Cloud. Collaboration with partners to create new values for the 5G era is introduced.

This study proposes a new style of Virtual Reality (VR) video viewing. We have developed high-resolution hemispheric camera composed of 250 Million-pixel CMOS Image Sensor and Fisheye Lens having 180° of a circumferential field angle. The ultra-high-definition dome movie taken with this camera can provide the highly realistic VR space without HMD to multiple audiences.

The resolution of images used by smartphone or television has been drastically improved in late years. Recently, ultra-high definition (8K) image has been attracting much attention, and many works to achieve the practical use of the 8K image is actively done. The practical application of 8K image does not only indicate that the image becomes high-definition. The 8K image might be widely used in various area where the image has not been used, and lead the new services and applications. In order to work the 8K image flexibly, 5th generation mobile communication system (5G) plays an important role. In this paper, we introduce our recent activities in the aspect of the feasibility and application of 8K transmission with 5G.

We have developed the world’s first VR 360°8K video live streaming and viewing system. This system enables real-time operation through stitching equipment to synthesize video from a number of cameras into 360°8K video without visible seams and encoding equipment that compresses and uploads the 360°8K video to a streaming server. Both pieces of equipment use FPGA technology. Also, HMD using Panorama Cho Engine technology and high-resolution liquid crystal displays enable 360°8K video viewing.
