    As for arc furnace, improvement of the productivity and mechanizations of the automatic operation are strongly requested.
    In answer to this, our company has developed Automatic Rapid Melting System (ARMS), as an object of the melt-down period since 1968.
    By improving and developing the ARMS and using minicomputer, we developed ARMS MARK II, which has program control of melt-down, independent control of each phase, judgment of the end of melt-down with melt-down conditions sensor and data treatment functions of operation. And we will report sbout its outline and merits.

    At present, an expendable type immersion thermocouple is used to measure the temperature of steel bath, but such a thermocouple has been used without any proper checking method up to now and therefore, an establishment of a high temperature calibration method of expendable type immersion thermocouple. There was made a test of the following two calibration methods as the checking methods for the thermocouple.
    (1) The U-tube calibration method which is to do the Pd point calibration without taking the thermocouple out of the silica U-tube.
    (2) The element wire calibration method which is to do the Pd point calibration taking the thermocouple out of the silica U-tube.
    After the results, it was confirmed that the latter method enables us to obtain higher calibration accuracy and the calibration operation is much easier than the former.

    After investigating the compression testing method against a plate type specimen by the cylindrical die as a cold forgeability which, when the history of strain during deformation is linear makes it possible to calculate the stress by the total strain theory, the underwritten facts have been confirmed.
    (1) The optimum conditions can be gained if a plate type specimen with thickness H, width 2H and radius of curvature of initial bulge profile (3.3∼6.6) H, is compressed by a cylindrical dies.
    (2) In the test under such a condition if only the tatal strain in height at fracture is measured, the local strain at the part where a crack occurs and the stress can be calculated accurately.

    Application of electrolysis etching under non-heated condition for detecting of macro structure of metals was investigated. In case of carbon steels and low alloy steels the hydrochloric acid aq. was observed to be proper as electrolyte, and in case of stainless steels and high nickel alloy the hydrochloric acid methanol was observed respectively.
    This method has such merits as improving the working environment and also treating the waste acid with less difficulty comparing with the conventional method which uses more concentrated acid under heated condition. Furthermore especially as far as these materials like high nickel alloy which are hard to be etched are concerned this method permits us easier detection of their macro structure.

    Two kinds of permanent magnet materials, such as Alnico and barium ferrite type, have been developed on a large industrial scale. Hereunder, the historical consideration on the development of the said two kinds' materials are described, referring to the recent researches.
    The future forecasting of the permanent magnet materials may be possible through this paper.

    Recently heat resisting steels and alloys have become very important because of the rapid progress of all sorts of heat engines, the high temperature chemical industry and atomic energy industry. Hereafter these industries will depend more and more upon the development of heat resisting steels and alloys. For example, the annual rise in the working temperatures of heat engines is considered to grow with the development of heat resistng steels and alloys.
    Recently the working temperature and pressure of steam turbines have been rising rapidly. In Japan, the maximum steam temperature and pressure were 450°C and 45kg/cm2 respectively in 1949. But they reached 566°C and 246kg/cm2 in 1967, and in the future they should rise higher with improvement of heat efficiency.
