    A model of friction reducing action of inclusions was proposed and the theoretical equations of the action of inclusions in metals were introduced.
    The equations were compared with the frictional characteristics of a single soft metal particle constricted by hard metal and experimental data in the machining of freemachining steel.
    The mechanism of the friction reducing action of inclusions was discussed in the paper and the effect of the size of inclusions on the friction was clarified.

    The crankshafts of a motor vehicle is one of these parts which require such properties of the highest levels with respect to materials used as the machinability including the forgeability, the strength and so on.
    In the case of crankshafts, it is essential to produce crankshafts that are reliable as to the quality characteristics at the lowest possible cost. However, the free cutting steels containing 0.2% lead has problems such that as its amount used increases and when billets are heated by induction heating in the process of hot forging, the lead contained in the steel evaporates as fume to damage the heating equipment.
    To solve the problem, we conducted researches on the technical art of materials which make it possible to reduce the lead content to such an extent as necessary for solving the problem and to offset the resultant lowering in the machinability without deteriorating the strength properties by changing the quantities of various elements, such as carbon, sulfur and so forth, so as to ensure a good and steady machinability.

    HSS tool life is longer for calcium deoxidized steels containing Anorthitic inclusions than for base steel.
    To investigate this mechanism hardness test of the synthetic inclusions and the lubrication test between tool and work materials were carried out, and it was confirmed that the decrease in abrasive wear through the lower Anorthitic inclusion hardness at elevated temperatures and/or low frictional energy through the lubricating effect of Anorthitic inclusion contribute to prolonging HSS tool life.

    The effects of free-machining elements, S, Pb, Se and Te on the machinability and corrosion resistance of the 18Cr-2Mo stainless steel were investigated. Good drillability is obtained by all these additives. Much longer life is obtained through the built-up layer formation promoted by S addition for high speed turning with carbide tools.
    However, since this layer reduces the finished surface texture, complex addition of Pb and Te with S is necessary.
    Se has the similar effect on machinability as S.
    S addition gives the worst corrosion resistance among these additives, and Pb, Se and Te cause little degradation.
    The new gradé Super free-machining stainless steel, which contains S, Pb and Te, has better machinability than low carbon free-machining steel containing S, Pb and Te, and almost the same machinability as Brass. The corrosion resistance of the steel bears comparison with SUS303 steel.

    Clarifiying the machining mechanism of a high Mn non-magnetic steel which has long been called a representative material hard to be machined an investigation was made about its proper cutting conditions. Also, another investigation of changing it into a free machining steel was made.
    (1) Comparing SCMnH3 (1.0C-13Mn) with SUS304 its principal force, shear stress on the cutting shear plane and the frictional stress on tool rake face are as higher as 1.3, 1.4 and 2 times than those of SUS304 respectively. (in case of V=60m/min)
    (2) The cutting temperature of SCMnH3 is about 1.4 times at the high temperature side.
    (3) In cutting SCMnH3, the most proper tool is M20 under different processing conditions. Although TiC-coated tool and Borazon tool are suitable for continuous cutting but these are improper for intermittent cutting.
    (4) In the face milling, DN body type cutter is recommendable and in this case favorable “down-cutting” can be obtained. Further, tip-chamfering should not be employed.
    (5) It was confirmed that cutting tool life of 0.7C-15Mn-1.2Ni steel and 0.5C-9Mn-7.5Ni-7.5Cr steel as well as SCMnH3 can be widely improved by Ca/Al treatment.

    Effect of zirconium on the hot-workability of resulfurized 12Cr-Ni type alloy has been studied by hot-upset and torsion tests. For cast alloys, critical reduction by upsetting shows high values in the range 17∼18 of Zr/S ratio. For forged alloy, number of twist to failure by torsion decreases with increasing of zirconium. With increasing of zirconium, the following sequence of changes in sulfide and zirconium compound: (Mn, Cr) S→(Zr, Mn, Cr) S+Ni5Zr→ZrS+Ni5Zr. In the amount of zirconium which forms zirconium sulfide free from other solid-solutioned metals and intermetallic compound Ni5Zr as low as possible, hot-workability was best. Machinability increased with increasing of zirconium and sulfur. In this alloy, the addition of 0.5∼0.8% zirconium and about 0.05% sulfur are desirable from viewpoints of hot-workability and machinability.

    Demand for improvement in machinability of materials has increased in oder to accomodate higher speed and more automatized machining technologies. In response to these circumstances free-machining steels have contributed to the developments in machining technologies and automotive engineering.
    Daido Steel has longer history and accomplishments in the production of free-machining steels, and its production of various grades of free-machining steels of high performance and reliability amounts to about 160, 000 ton per year.
    Grades, properties, characteristics and applications are introduced in this paper of the various free-machining steels produced by Daido Steel to give customers the reference in selecting the proper free-machining steels. Explanation is given to leaded, super-and ultrasuper-free-machining steels; free-machining stainless steels, magnetic materials and tool steels.
